Each year, Grade 4 students study the history of immigration in the United States. As part of their interdisciplinary coursework, students visit Ellis Island to gain a deeper understanding of what it was like to begin a new life in a new country.
Their studies culminated in two powerful projects: a curated and interactive Immigration Museum shaped by months of research into Ellis and Angel Islands, and a dance performance that brought together Social Studies, movement, literacy and poetry.

In the inaugural Grade 8 Capstone Showcase, Spence students displayed and presented research projects they diligently worked on throughout the year. The varied topics students chose to explore included the whaling industry, prosthetic devices, the impact of artificial intelligence, and sports psychology.
At Spence’s 129th Commencement, speaker Lucy T. ’26 reflected on the meaning behind the senior class slogan, “Stay Gold,” which pays homage to Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” and its famous reinterpretation in The Outsiders. Lucy explained: “After all, the slogan on our shirts does not read ‘nothing gold can stay,’ but instead: ‘stay gold.’”
She continued: “These times in our lives don’t last forever... But the memories, the maturity established by our time at Spence will hold steadfast in our hearts and minds for years to come.”
Congratulations, Class of 2026! Thank you for the spirit, joy, and light you have brought to Spence. 2TAY 6OLD!

Grade 4 students experienced Frida Kahlo’s legacy firsthand when members of her family visited the Lower School following the students’ portraiture study.
Known for her vivid self-portraits and deeply personal visual storytelling, Frida inspired students to create self-portraits that highlighted their individuality. The visit began with a gallery walk, where students presented their work and reflected on what they learned through the art-making process. They then learned more about Frida’s evolution as an artist and asked thoughtful questions about how her family continues to honor her life and work today.
The family left students with advice at the heart of Frida’s legacy: embrace your individuality and let your life inspire your art.
Join Head of School Felicia Wilks and renowned legal scholar Kenji Yoshino on the latest episode of Spence in Conversation for a discussion on cultivating thoughtful discernment, curiosity, and critical thinking.
