For new Muslims, this time of year can be difficult.
Give yourself grace.
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
Move at your own pace.
~
And to my born-Muslim friends —
be gentle with new converts.
Support them.
Don’t judge them.
Faith grows with patience and care.
~You’re not alone.
We see you. 🤍

Our 501(c)(3) application was approved! American Muslim Experience is now officially a registered nonprofit in New York City. This step opens the door to more longterm storytelling, community partnerships, and deeper impact.
We started AME to foster understanding, empathy, and social progress by showcasing the cultural, religious, and personal experiences of everyday American Muslims.
This work now has a home!

As I meet who have served in the U.S. military, I’m reminded how complex and deeply personal the idea of belonging can be. Their stories challenge assumptions and expand what it means to serve and to be seen as both Muslim and American.
Meet SSgt. Lourdes Loyola. Lourdes is a Mexican-born American Muslim, mother of three sons, and a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. She enlisted in 2009 and reverted to Islam in 2015.

Hope is powerful.
While many politicians are full of hate and bigotry, hope and compassion will unite us ALL.
The rally and the overall message from is of hope and possibilities.
“The dream of every is simply to be treated the same as any other … And yet for too long we have been told to ask for less than that, and to be satisfied with whatever little we receive. No more.”
― Zohran Mamdani, in a speech outside a Bronx mosque responding to attacks.
Indignity, no more!

A mother and son at the University of Michigan are proving that determination and education can bridge generations.
Nuha Alfahham and her son, Sinan Abdulhak, are both pursuing doctoral degrees at Michigan Engineering — Alfahham in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Abdulhak in Industrial and Operations Engineering.
Alfahham’s research focuses on improving water and wastewater disinfection systems, developing tools to detect slow-growing pathogens and studying the effects of new disinfectants on antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Her work aims to help the billions worldwide who still lack access to clean water and sanitation.
Her passion for environmental issues began during her childhood in the Middle East and grew through years of professional experience. “My mother was an educator who showed me not to let anything stand in the way of our dreams,” Alfahham said.
Abdulhak, inspired by his mother’s drive, is using artificial intelligence to create systems that make commercial aviation safer and more sustainable. His projects include developing human-machine models for air traffic operations and designing greener aircraft for the future.
“It’s inspiring to see how my mom persevered,” he said. “Her example motivates me every day.”
As Alfahham prepares to complete her Ph.D. and return to industry, her son is just starting his own research journey. Together, they represent a rare story of shared ambition and a family tradition built on learning, perseverance, and impact.
