Green Egg from Red Cabbage? Magic or Science Experiment!
Have you ever seen a vibrant green fried egg that looks like it's straight out of a sci-fi movie? In today's video on Fusion Lab X, we're doing one of the coolest and most visual DIY science experiments: using boiled red cabbage juice as a natural pH indicator to test common household liquids! Most importantly, we will uncover the truth behind the viral "Real or Fake" green egg photo!
How Does Red Cabbage Reveal pH Secrets?
Red cabbage isn't just a delicious veggie; it contains a magical compound called Anthocyanin. This is a natural pigment that changes color based on the acidic or basic (alkaline) environment it contacts. With just a blended or boiled red cabbage, you instantly have a highly accurate and safe biological pH testing kit.
Mind-Blowing Color Changes in Our Experiment:
In this video, I will drop red cabbage juice into 5 different liquids representing various pH levels to see what chemical reactions occur:
Lemon juice (Strong Acid): Upon contact, the cabbage juice instantly turns bright red or vivid pink. The citric acid alters the molecular structure of the anthocyanin.
White vinegar (Weak Acid): A milder reaction, creating a beautiful soft pink or purplish-red hue.
Filtered water (Neutral): Acting as our baseline (pH 7), the water keeps the original deep purple color of the cabbage intact.
Baking Soda (Weak Base / Alkaline): The magic begins! The purple solution immediately shifts to a stunning blue or teal color.
Toilet bowl cleaner (Strong Base): An explosive reaction! This harsh cleaning chemical forces the purple juice to turn vibrant green, and eventually bright yellow right before our eyes.
The Truth About The Green Egg (The Part You've Been Waiting For!)
The highlight of this video is solving the "Green Egg" mystery. Is it a hoax or scientific truth? I separated an egg white and mixed in a few drops of red cabbage juice. The result? Egg whites are slightly alkaline (pH ranging from 7.6 to 9.2), so they interact with the anthocyanin and turn a brilliant emerald green! When fried in a pan, the proteins coagulate to create a truly bizarre-looking dish.
