Our team from the Enslaved Spaces Project recently visited the remote village of Tankular in the Gambia and spoke with the Akalo (chief) and the elders about their local history and the history of the Tankular factory. According to the village elders, the factory was located in this very village. Stay tuned for our next post, where we'll share some photos from our visit. Historical Context
The Tankular Factory is a relatively unknown historical landmark located in the Gambia, West Africa. Built in the late 1700s, the factory played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade. During the 1600s, trading factories were established in various parts of the world to facilitate international trade. These factories were commercial outposts where traders from different countries could exchange goods, including enslaved people, and conduct business.

Today, the landmark serves as a reminder of the brutal legacy of slavery and the lasting impact it has had on communities around the world. The Enslaved Spaces Project is currently working to uncover the hidden histories of sites like the Tankular Factory and to shed light on the lives of the countless individuals who were impacted by the slave trade. Through research and community engagement, the project aims to promote a deeper understanding of this dark period in history and to honor the resilience and strength of those who suffered under its grip.
