Course Spotlight 🗽 Writing the Big City: Reporting in New York

Often described as a “world in a city,” virtually every type of person can be found in New York’s boroughs. This course teaches students how to capture the city’s rich fabric of people and events in words, pictures and sounds.

Participants will develop basic reporting skills: interviewing anyone anywhere, news judgment, writing compelling articles and pitching them to editors. Students will also practice thinking like reporters, crafting and pitching ideas, ridding their writing of clutter, fact-checking their work and keenly observing the city.

There are a lot of interesting details in the crowd, and visual parallels between the statue and the people holding their cameras.” —Jennifer Swanson, photo editor at The New York Times
