Picture a forest canopy in late Permian Eastern Europe, over 250 million years ago.

High above the swampy ground, a tiny creature darts between branches with surprising agility. Suminia getmanovi—no bigger than a squirrel, measuring just 30 to 40 centimeters from nose to tail tip—clings to a fern-like trunk, its long, clawed fingers wrapping around the bark with almost primate-like precision.

This little anomodont was ahead of its time. While most of its relatives stuck to the ground, Suminia took to the trees—and evolution gave it the tools to do so. Its hands and feet were remarkably dexterous, with long digits and possibly even opposable thumbs and big toes, making it one of the earliest known vertebrates to truly master an arboreal lifestyle.

This lineup (not to scale!) brings together four incredible shark-like predators from different corners of prehistory, each with its own unique story:

Stethacanthus productus (Late Devonian to Late Carboniferous, ~2–3 m): With its bizarre anvil-shaped dorsal fin, this shark-like fish looked more like a living weapon than a swimmer. Its strange "ironing board" fin was likely used for display or mating rituals.

Cladoselache magnificus (Late Devonian, ~2 m): One of the earliest true sharks, Cladoselache had a streamlined body and a mouth full of multi-cusped teeth—perfect for chasing down fast prey in ancient seas.

Otodus megalodon (Early Miocene to Late Pliocene, ~15 m): The undisputed king of all sharks, Megalodon needs no introduction. At 15 meters long, this giant was the ultimate apex predator, capable of taking down whales with a single bite.

Cretoxyrhina mantelli (Cretaceous, ~8 m): Known as the "Ginsu shark" for its razor-sharp teeth, this fast-swimming predator was the terror of the Cretaceous oceans, hunting everything from fish to marine reptiles.
