Genting Highlands, a popular hill resort in Malaysia, sits at about 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level. When viewed from far away in Kuala Lumpur on clear nights, its bright hotels, casinos, and theme parks shine so strongly that the whole mountain top looks like a glowing city floating above the clouds.
This illusion happens because Genting is much higher and cooler than the hot, humid lowlands below, so clouds and mist often form underneath it, hiding the dark mountain slope. Only the lights on the peak remain visible, creating a magical “sky city” effect.
Photos taken from KL rooftops regularly go viral, especially when the Petronas Towers are in the foreground. The best views appear during cool, dry evenings.
This natural phenomenon boosts tourism and reminds us how elevation and weather can create stunning optical surprises in modern landscapes.

On July 21, 1956, a U.S. Navy Grumman F11F-1 Tiger fighter jet accidentally shot itself down during a test flight over Long Island. Pilot Tom Attridge fired a short burst of 20mm cannon shells while diving at supersonic speed (Mach 1+).
As he continued diving and slowing, the jet flew into the path of its own bullets, which travel slower than the plane at that moment. One shell hit the windshield, another damaged the engine, forcing Attridge to crash-land. He survived with minor injuries.
Photos of the wrecked F11F and gun-camera film confirmed the self-hit. This rare event showed the dangers of high-speed gun use in early supersonic jets.
The incident led to new firing rules and helped develop guided missiles, reducing reliance on guns in modern fighters.
