Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling at Westminster College The Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling at Westminster College - A yearly, week-long camp.
2018: July 8-14

Instruction, designed for high school students and adults, will focus on the authentic performance of traditional Scottish fiddle music. Discussion will cover issues such as
bowing techniques, ornamentation, interpretation, and rhythmic nuance. Tunes will be taught both through music and by ear. Additional instruction will include topics such as
accompanying, Scottish fiddle pedagogy, Scottish history, Ceilidh (traditional party) dancing, and using Scottish fiddling within the context of a performing group. Each
participant will also receive private lesson time with each of the fiddle instructors. Daily Activities:
A typical day will include three different classes of instruction focused on the playing and interpreting of traditional Scottish fiddle tunes, an enrichment class on a related topic,
tea and biscuit breaks, time to practice/visit/sleep/explore the area, three meals in the college dining hall, and an evening activity. Evening activities will include an instructors’ concert, a traditional ceilidh party with dancing, an all-school concert, a bonfire jam by the lake, and a Burns party and sing-
along. All concerts will take place in the lake-side covered amphitheater. Other activities* can include exploring the local walking/hiking trails on Westminster's campus, tennis, biking, fishing, canoing, riding horses at the local Little Neshannock
Stables, taking a driving tour through the local Amish country, or shopping in the boutiques in the nearby village of Volant or at the Grove City Premium Outlets.

*depending on the activity, additional fees may apply. Continuing Education Credits:
PA teachers are eligible for Act 48 continuing education hours. (25+ hours)
There is an extra $5 cost for processing the hours through the PA Midwestern
Intermediate Unit IV. Teachers can fill out the paperwork when at Strathgheny. Non-PA teachers may request documentation to remit to their schools. Instructors:

We are very very sorry to let you know of the passing of one of our heroes, a great musician, friend and teacher Aonghas Grant senior, the left-handed fiddler of Lochaber. He died peacefully at home at the age of 94. His music will live on through the hands of the many musicians he taught, and through the hands of those they teach in their turn. I don't know how many of his students received his greatest honour - the Red Tassle - but we fear there will now be no more. A huge loss to Lochaber, to Scotland, and to music. We were lucky to have him as long as we did.
