"Unprecedented" is a word that has been used by many to describe the world's current situation. However, a century ago, the world faced another pandemic. The Influenza Epidemic of 1918 also put cities under lockdown, influenced people to wear masks in public, and closed schools for weeks, all while people around the world fell ill. Letter carriers, mass transit workers, and others who came in contact with the public, were especially vulnerable to disease. Wearing a face mask helped them avoid contagion.
