~Cuda Club Week 2~

This week, we welcomed 27 students to the club, including several new faces! Our meeting time was shortened due to the school schedule, so we were lucky to have a quick meal provided by Joan Norcutt. Publix subs and cookies are always appreciated. Thank you, Joan!

As we are just getting started this year, and with new members, we talk a lot about what we do as a club. We covered things like our weekly meetings, great speakers, volunteering opportunities, special events, and the benefits we offer students who need assistance.

We also discussed the spectrum of effort. Considering tasks at home, classes, and our club specifically... what tasks fall under bare minimum, above and beyond, or somewhere in the middle of the spectrum of effort? Where do washing the dishes, making your bed, taking out the trash, making a meal and cleaning it up, etc fall in your household for your children?

These tasks are choices we make (to do or not do), so we control the outcome! These choices matter because they reflect on us in many ways. They not only impact our families, but can also shape our future. For school and clubs, teachers and the Cuda Club may write recommendations for college or jobs. Students might not have the highest grade, but their effort serves an important purpose and has an impact. When we show up, participate, and our word means something, people are much more willing to help and support us!

If you feel compelled to share, please tell us a time when your effort mattered and helped you excel.

Cuda Club is back in action!

We had a wonderful first meeting back in our classroom this week. We welcomed many returning members and met at least a dozen new (to our club) students who wanted to check out what we offer. It is a blessing to have so many word-of-mouth referrals and friends bringing friends.

Everyone enjoyed Chicken Alfredo thanks to the continued generous support of General Public House, and we made introductions, handed out paperwork, and talked about the club and what we offer. Many students selected school supplies and took snacks for later.

We are excited to share more with the students in the weeks to come. We will have a robust calendar of life skills topics, engaging speakers, special events, and lots of opportunities to volunteer in our community.

As always, if you want to get involved by speaking to our students, providing a meal or snacks, or have another idea for getting involved, don't hesitate to reach out.

We also want to recognize Kat and Chantal, our amazing volunteers, who greet every student with kindness and care and are an integral part of what we do each week. We appreciate you and your incredible support.

Where Are They Now? Ericka Kirkpatrick Roubidoux (Ericka Roubidoux)

We caught up with Ericka this past week, Cudas Unhooked's very first Club President back in 2010, and NSBHS Class of 2011 Valedictorian.

From the outside, Ericka looked like she had it all. What people didn't see was that her Subway paycheck was helping keep her household afloat while her mother struggled with alcoholism. Cudas Unhooked became the steady support underneath the grades: life skills, scholarship help, even the everyday essentials for her Gainesville apartment that her full ride to UF didn't cover.

Ericka graduated in three years with a double major and a minor, then went on to earn her PhD, chasing her first love — microbiology — through programs in NYC and Tennessee. Today she's an expert in influenza virology, serology, and vaccinology at Pfizer.

She's married now, raising a 4-year-old son and giving him the childhood she always dreamed of. Her message to current club members: "It is hard, but you can do it. You can break the cycle."

We couldn't be prouder of her, or more grateful for her sharing her story. This is why Cudas Unhooked exists, and why it still matters for our students today.

It might be summer, but our club volunteers are already busy planning the 2026-27 school year. As you know, we love to involve the community. So, as one of our biggest fans, if you are wondering how you can help Cudas Unhooked, we have a few ideas for you!

Both options are available to individuals, clubs/groups, or businesses, so if you want to help or know someone who might be a good fit, please let us know.

1) Be a Club Meal Sponsor: Sign up for one (or more) Tuesday club meeting dates to provide lunch for about 30 students. The meals can be from a restaurant, a catering order from Publix (for example), or even homemade.

2) Speak at a club meeting or Coaching Dinner: We are always looking for engaging speakers to help us teach our kids. Topics range from life skills to career options to inspiring stories and more.

If you'd like to learn more or are ready to schedule, please connect with Amanda, our Director of Student Services. Simply email her at [email protected]. Thank you 🙏
