What an unforgettable finish to an incredible 2-week journey in Mexico! 🇲🇽✨
Our play architects spent their final day exploring the rich history of Mérida with a walking tour through the city’s historic center, including a stop at the iconic Casa Montejo, original home of the Spanish conquistadors in the Yucatán. 🏛️
From there, the group headed to Comedor Zarigüeyas for a heartfelt farewell celebration. Our students jumped right into action—leading games alongside the local children and helping prepare, serve, and clean up dinner together through our Play Kitchen program.
Leaving was full of happy tears and warm hugs as we bid adiós to the wonderful mothers, children, and fellow program teammates from across the U.S. 💙 While the trip has come to an end and everyone heads home today, the bond created and the impact made over the past two weeks will stay with all of us forever.
Thank you, Mérida! 🇲🇽

Wednesday marked the final day of the Good Neighbor PlayLab in Mérida, Mexico! 🇲🇽✨
Our students officially graduated as “Play Architects,” reflecting on their impactful work with Comedor Zarigüeyas and how these past two weeks transformed their understanding of play. From reading emotional letters to next year’s cohort to exploring local culture with host families and bonding with friends from Maria Regina High School, we couldn’t be prouder of our Koalas! 🐨
Up next: Today’s farewell celebration will highlight new friendships with students from Maryland, Minnesota and Connecticut before the journey home on Friday! 🎓🎉

Our final three days in Mérida are here, and what an unforgettable day it’s been! Tuesday, the morning started at Comedor Zarigüeyas, where our play architects brought their building projects to teach and play with the kids. From painting tiny model park benches to rebuilding Uxmal’s Pyramid of the Magician, watching our Koalas lead such inspiring activities for the children—and their amazing mothers—was pure magic.

The fun quickly spilled over into the nearby park for games of soccer, tag, and playground adventures! Seeing all the hard work put into action truly proved what PlayLab is all about: play is for everyone, every age.

After an active morning, we returned to the CIEE center to reflect on the last 10 days and how much our understanding of play has evolved. To cap off the day, local young volunteers dropped by to teach us traditional Mexican games like Lotería! We’re already counting down to our farewell party with the Zarigüeyas kids before we make our way back home. ✨🇲🇽

On Monday, our students jumped right back in with the Good Neighbor PlayLab, diving into their final projects focused on the power of play. Using basic materials like popsicle sticks, they recreated the ancient pyramids of Uxmal—inspired by their Saturday excursion and the legend of the Dwarf King of Uxmal, which they performed last week! 🏰🎨
In the afternoon, Spanish class went on location! 🥖🇲🇽 Their instructor took them right next door to the local bakery, where they put their language skills to work—ordering delicious treats in Spanish and chatting with their peers.
Today marks a special capstone moment as they return to Comedor Zarigüeyas to share their play projects, exchange traditional children’s games, and connect with the community. We can’t believe we’re already reaching the final days of this unforgettable two-week journey in Mexico!

A weekend filled with Culture, Cocoa & Connections in the Yucatán! 🇲🇽🏛️
Our students had an unforgettable weekend full of rich history, local flavor, and family time!
Saturday, students explored the breathtaking archeological site of Uxmal! As a UNESCO World Heritage site, this ancient Mayan city boasts some of the most remarkably well-preserved pyramids in the region. Our group enjoyed an incredible guided tour learning all about the fascinating history and architecture of the area.
After lunch, they dove deep into the history of chocolate in the Yucatán! The Museo Choco-Story, part museum, part botanical garden, and part animal sanctuary (home to monkeys, birds, and even jaguars!), this multipurpose site was a huge hit. The highlight? A hands-on demonstration of traditional chocolate making—complete with a delicious tasting of freshly made chocolate!
Today, the girls are enjoying a well-deserved restful day with their host families, relaxing and recharging after a busy, exciting week in Mérida as they gear up for our final few days starting Monday as we partner with the wonderful children at Comedor Zarigüeyas! Stay tuned for more updates! ❤️✨

What an incredible end to week one of the Good Neighbor PlayLab in Mérida! Our students kicked off the day at the CIEE center, fine-tuning their rehearsals and running through their short story plays before heading back to Comedor Zarigüeyas, where a room full of eager children was waiting. The group brought the classic Yucatán tale The Dwarf King of Uxmal to life, featuring Luz Gonzalez Hoyos as narrator, Sofia Richards as the Dwarf King, Madeline Chaput as the King, Reagan Spillane as the Mother of the Dwarf King, and McKayla Roza as the Witch. The local children were absolutely thrilled by the performance, especially when our Koalas invited a few surprise guest volunteers from the audience to join them on stage!

After an energetic morning, students headed back to CIEE for Spanish class to round out their studies. Now, everyone is diving into a well-deserved weekend break to explore the stunning culture, beauty, and sights of Mérida and the surrounding Yucatán peninsula alongside their chaperones and host families. We can’t wait to see what week two of the PlayLab workshop brings on Monday!

✨ Thursday Fun at Play Studio 3: Making, Building, and Thinking! ✨
It was an action-packed day of creativity and culture! In the morning as the girls dove into storycrafting—using every creative tool at their disposal to design custom props and costumes for a theatrical version of The Dwarf King of Uxmal. 🎭🎨
After a quick lunch break, it was time to move! Professional dancers stopped by to lead a lively workshop on both traditional and modern Latin American dance styles. 💃🏽🎶
Today, the girls are taking their talent on the road to Comedor Zarigüeyas to perform their creative interpretation of The Dwarf King of Uxmal for the kids. Stay tuned! 🌟

Storytelling, puppets, and local adventure! 🎭✨

Yesterday in Mérida, the girls took a deep dive into using storytelling and art for educational play. Before lunch, students took turns reading stories to the class, followed by a professional puppet show in Spanish to demonstrate the power of creative learning in action.

These skills and workshops will directly support the girls later this week when they design their own educational playlabs for the children at Comedor Zarigüeyas! 🎨📚
To wrap up the day, they took their Spanish class on the road with a guided walking tour through the center of Mérida—complete with a well-deserved Dairy Queen surprise at the end! 🍦🇲🇽

We were thrilled to gather together for a special celebration honoring our softball standout, Ava Papaleo ‘26 as we had the joy of watching Ava unveil her official Gatorade New York Softball Player of the Year banner, which will hang proudly in the Tully Family Auditorium-Gymnasium to inspire future Koalas for years to come. 🥎✨
This incredible recognition caps off Ava’s legendary high school career—including a .554 career batting average, 26 home runs, a 4.30 GPA, and a dedication to community service that truly embodies Serviam.
We couldn’t be prouder of everything Ava has accomplished, and we can’t wait to cheer her on as she heads to the University of Virginia for her next chapter! ⚔️💙🧡

Yesterday, our girls kicked off their journey in Mexico with an orientation at the CIEE Learning Center before diving right into the heart of the community.
They visited Comedor Zarigüeyas, an inspiring community of local mothers working together to provide healthy meals for their children. It was incredible to see the ingenious ways these mothers maximize scarce resources to keep their kids nourished!
Over the next 10 days, our students will be studying the science of play in education and creating meaningful play-centered enrichment activities for the children at the comedor.
After returning to CIEE for their first classes on play as an early childhood educational practice, we wrapped up the day with a special birthday celebration... ¡Feliz Cumpleaños, McKayla! 🎂🎉
There’s a lot of hard work ahead, but Day 1 was just a taste of all the wonderful things in store for our students! ✨
