What is Ghunnah? 📖

Today, let’s learn one of the most important sounds in Tajweed: Ghunnah (الغُنّة).

Ghunnah is a nasal sound that comes from the nose and is held for 2 counts in specific Tajweed rules.

🔹 Where do we hear Ghunnah?

The clearest example is when ن (Noon) or م (Meem) has a Shaddah:

نَّ — مَّ

Both are pronounced with a clear nasal sound for 2 counts.

✅ Examples:

إِنَّ
ثُمَّ

Listen to the نّ and مّ — hold the nasal sound gently for 2 counts.

🌟 Easy Tip:

نّ + مّ = Ghunnah → 2 Counts

Don’t make the sound from the mouth alone. Ghunnah is a nasal sound.

When is ل (Lam) Heavy or Light? 📖

Today, let’s learn an important Tajweed rule about the letter ل (Lam).

The letter ل is normally pronounced light (Tarqiq). However, there is one important exception: the Lam in the name of Allah — اللّٰه.

🔹 When is ل in “Allah” Heavy?

The ل in اللّٰه is pronounced heavy (Tafkhim) when the letter immediately before it has:

✅ Fathah (َ)
Example: قَالَ اللّٰهُ

✅ Dammah (ُ)
Example: عَبْدُ اللّٰهِ

🔹 When is it Light?

When the letter immediately before اللّٰه has a Kasrah (ِ), the Lam is pronounced light (Tarqiq).

✅ Example:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ

Here, the مِ has a Kasrah, so the Lam in اللّٰه is light.

🌟 Easy Tip:

Fathah / Dammah → Heavy ل
Kasrah → Light ل

When is ر (Ra) Heavy Even After a Kasrah? 📖

We’ve learned that ر (Ra) is usually light when it has a Kasrah or when a sakin رْ is preceded by a Kasrah.

But there is an important exception! ✨

Sometimes رْ is pronounced heavy, even though the letter before it has a Kasrah.

🔸 The Rule

When رْ is preceded by a Kasrah and is followed in the same word by one of the heavy letters:

خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ

the ر can be pronounced heavy.

✅ Example:

مِرْصَادًا

Here:

* رْ has Sukoon
* It is preceded by مِ with Kasrah
* It is followed by ص, a heavy letter

➡️ Therefore, the ر is pronounced heavy.

🌟 Easy Tip:

Kasrah before رْ does NOT always mean light ر.

Look at the letter after رْ too!

Making mistakes while learning the Quran is not failure—it is part of the journey.

“The one who recites the Quran and finds it difficult will have two rewards.”
(Sahih Muslim 798)

🔹 When is ر Light?

The letter ر is generally pronounced light when it has:

✅ Kasrah (ِ)
Example: رِ

✅ Sukoon (ْ) and the letter before it has a Kasrah.

Examples:

رِزْقًا
فِرْعَوْنَ
مِرْيَةٍ

Listen carefully to the ر — it should be pronounced with a light, thin sound.
