Saturday’s IACD meeting featured two incredible presentations!

First, Dr. Kimberly Sanzo shared insights on the Language Skills Hierarchy for DHH children. Then Dr. Christina Rivera discussed Literacy Development in DHH Children.

We’re so grateful to our presenters for sharing their expertise and helping us deepen our understanding of language and literacy for DHH learners!

✨ Saturday at IACD in Review! ✨
We were honored to welcome two incredible presenters who brought powerful insights to the table.

Dr. Amber Joy Martin kicked off the day with a compelling discussion on the critical period for language development, emphasizing how timing and access are everything when it comes to language acquisition.

Then, Dr. Matt Hall took us deeper into the topic of language access, walking us through how to assess it effectively and understand language access profiles—a vital tool in supporting Deaf individuals’ language journeys.

We left the day with a renewed understanding of how early, equitable language access truly shapes lives.

At our first IACD seminar of the Fall semester, we had the privilege of learning from powerful guest presenters who shared their perspectives as Deaf children, Deaf adults and parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) children. They discussed candidly their experiences with language access, education, and both the challenges and the beauty of navigating the world as DHH individuals and families.

Thank you to our amazing presenters Dr. Jessica Hoffman, Kim Sanzo, Erica Salcido, the Simmons-McKnight family, Conniree Francis and Rian Gayle!

Yesterday was the final session of our spring semester Early Intervention class. Students learned from deaf school psychologist Alexandra Roca about the impacts of language deprivation in school-age children. After a year of learning about the importance of early language access, foundations of language and literacy, and strategies to support the development of a strong language foundation, students finished their IACD year learning from an expert who who imparted this important lesson: Language Deprivation Syndrome can’t be cured, but it can be prevented. The next step for our IACD students is their practicum experiences this summer. Congratulations to all these students for completing their coursework!

A week ago the students went on a field trip to the Center for Hearing and Communication in lower Manhattan. While they were there, they were able to learn from teacher of the Deaf, Dana Wallach, Audiologist Dominique Callandrillo, and Speech Language Pathologist Alison Diamond. The students learned about the early intervention process from the time of suspected hearing loss, observed both individual and group speech and language therapy sessions, and received a tour of the facilities, which included the Center’s assistive technology room and it’s competing noise room, which is used for functional listening assessment and therapy.

Last photo shows dolls with hearing aids and cochlear implants, which increases representation of hearing loss amongst children’s toys and shows the children at the CHC that they are represented. Also, there are photo books that show the journeys of the children with hearing loss who get their services at the center. They make these books so they can share their stories with their friends and classmates. This was an amazing experience, Thank you so much to the team at CHC for welcoming us and inspiring us!

Last weekend our students were able to learn about and handle hearing aids, cochlear implants, and ways of troubleshooting devices. We would like to thank audiologists Jessica Hoffman and Kristi D’Auria for reviewing audiological testing & listening technologies and also for introducing the students to some of the challenging audiological cases they have worked on in their clinical practices. The IACD students engaged in critical thinking to better understand these cases. Drs. Hoffman and D’Auria, It was a pleasure to have you with us!

We give a warm welcome to our guest presenters for this weekend! For this Saturday we will be joined by Kristi D’Auria and Jessica Hoffman, who are Audiologists joining us all the way from Westchester Medical Center’s Cochlear Implant Center. Following with Sunday we have Leah Geer and Razi Zarchy, who will be presenting on the ASL at home curriculum. We’re excited and thankful for their support to our program and we’re excited for this weekend!

Today, our team presented at the ACE-DHH conference in Washington, DC. The title of our presentation was “In Pursuit of Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Practices in Early intervention: a Model for Professional Development.
