What is a mill and how does it affect school funding?

A mill is a unit used to calculate property tax. One mill generates one dollar for every one thousand dollars of assessed property value. In Ohio, assessed value is 35 percent of your home’s market value. If a home is worth 100,000 dollars its assessed value is 35,000 dollars and one mill would generate 35 dollars in tax.

Understanding millage is key to understanding how local funding impacts both household budgets and school budgets.

🐾📚 Before summer break, West students from Mrs. Evans’, Mrs. VanArsdalen’s, and Mrs. Woofter’s classes visited the Humane Society for a heartwarming adventure!

Students had the opportunity to snuggle with some precious animals while reading to them, creating a special experience filled with kindness, compassion, and lots of smiles. What an amazing day for our students and their furry friends!

Did you know? Every two years, the state of Ohio passes a new budget that outlines how public dollars will be spent, including funding for schools like New Philadelphia. Lawmakers in Columbus debate priorities during the spring of each odd-numbered year and must finalize the budget by June 30 before the new fiscal year begins on July 1.

These decisions directly impact the resources available to our district and can affect everything from staffing to academic programs.

🚣‍♂️💦 Before summer break began, our AP Physics and College Prep (CP) Physics students put their engineering skills to the test during the Maiden Voyage Cardboard Boats event at the Tuscora Park Pool on Wednesday, May 20!

Students designed and launched their own cardboard boats, testing buoyancy, teamwork, creativity, and courage out on the water. Some boats sailed smoothly… while others became one with the pool a little sooner than planned. 😂

To make things even more exciting, Mr. McClelland’s class joined in by “bombing” the boats with water balloons during their voyage! We are so proud of the problem-solving, innovation, and fun our students brought to this hands-on learning experience. 🌊👏
