This hands-on workshop will guide woodland owners through the forest management planning process, from setting objectives and understanding silvicultural practices to preparing for the harvest. Farmers and ranchers in the North Central region are invited to submit grant proposals to explore sustainable agriculture solutions to problems on the farm or ranch. Chainsaw Safety Workshop - Saturday, October 24, 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM, Harrison State Forest Trail Riders Campground, Cadiz

Chainsaws are essential pieces of equipment to manage a woodland. However, when not used safely, they become incredibly dangerous, causing operators to be at an increased risk of life-threatening injuries.

In this workshop, trail maintenance crews and landowners will have the opportunity to learn about safe operation of chainsaws, including the necessary proper personal protective equipment, what to do before turning on a chainsaw, hazard mitigation, and practical saw operations.

Instruction provided by the Ohio Forestry Association. Those who plan to handle a chainsaw during the class will need to sign a liability waiver. Cost is $20 per person to participate in the training. For those seeking CSAW Basic Certification, cost of certification is $100.

Investments 101 for Farm Families - Tuesday, October 13, 6:30-9:00 PM, The Schoolhouse Museum, Hopedale, Ohio

Have you started thinking about retirement, transitioning the farm to the next generation, or how to make the most of accumulated farm profits? Many farm families spend years building equity, paying down debt, and growing successful enterprises, only to face new questions about investing with each season or harvest.

Interested in improving herd genetics while reducing the costs associated with maintaining a bull? Join Ohio State University Extension, ABS, and SB Nemo Farm for pizza and a Beef and Dairy Cattle Artificial Insemination (AI) Workshop designed for producers interested in learning the fundamentals of AI and reproductive management.

This 2-part workshop will meet over October 7 & 14 (2 hours each session) and cover the benefits and practical considerations of implementing AI in beef and dairy operations. Participants will gain an understanding of why producers use AI, the equipment and supplies needed to get started, estrus synchronization protocols, and how Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) can be used to select superior genetics. In addition, participants will compare the costs and benefits of AI versus maintaining a herd bull and learn how AI can fit into their herd management goals. Whether you are considering AI for the first time or looking to refine your breeding program, this workshop will provide research-based information to help you make informed decisions for your operation.

This free one-day event, held in cooperation with the USDA Farm Service Agency, will bring together youth, educators, urban farmers, and community leaders to explore educational pathways, mentorship opportunities, and practical resources that support the development of the next generation of urban agriculture leaders.

Did you lose a purse at the 2026 Tuscarawas County Fair? We found it in the Jr. Fair Board Office and it is now being safely guarded by our Little Tuskies at the Extension Office. Stop by during our office hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - noon, 1-4 p.m.) to pick it up. (Arrangements can be made for an alternative time; call us at 330-339-2337.) Although the Little Tuskies are quite attached to it, they've been told we can't keep it forever! Pick up or contact us by October 31!
