Important conversations around access to complex, grade-level text and how we support all learners in reaching it.

Excited to be building and continuing this work together.

We knew early—and we waited. This blog unpacks what happens when schools delay support, why early identification matters, and how targeted, explicit instruction can change the trajectory for every struggling reader.

đź“– Sundays with Sarah

“English is the destination — reading is the route.”

Secondary classrooms are filled with students who bring a wide range of reading skills—but that doesn’t mean expectations should shift. It means instruction should.

In this week’s blog, Sarah shares practical, no-fail strategies to help students access complex texts—starting tomorrow.

📚✨ REIMAGINING READING FOR ADOLESCENTS ✨📚

We’ve been thinking about reading as two phases:
➡️ “Learn to read”
➡️ “Read to learn”

But the research says it’s not that simple. 👇

🔍 Reading Reimagined (AERDF, 2026) found that many students in grades 4–8 still lack the advanced decoding skills needed to handle complex texts.

🔍 And a 2024 ETS study (Wang, O’Reilly, & Sutherland) shows students must reach a “decoding threshold” to fully benefit from comprehension instruction.

đź’ˇ Together, the message is clear:
Decoding and comprehension don’t happen in separate stages—they develop together over time.

If decoding isn’t strong enough:
➡️ Comprehension instruction becomes less effective
➡️ Reading growth slows
➡️ Students struggle more as texts get harder

🚨 So what needs to change?
✔️ Continue decoding support beyond early grades
✔️ Teach multisyllabic word reading explicitly
✔️ Align instruction with increasing text complexity

💬 Reimagining reading means letting go of the idea that foundational skills are “finished” by 3rd grade.

It’s never too late to build decoding—
and it’s essential for true comprehension. 💪📖

We are all teachers of language.

When we move beyond silos, we start to see what’s always been true -- language lives in every classroom.

This week’s Sundays with Sarah reflection, inspired by Dr. Antonio Fierro, is one you won’t want to miss.
