Have you heard these myths before? ⁠

Dyslexia doesn't affect that many kids. ⁠
It's not really that common. ⁠
I'm sure I don't have kids with dyslexia in my class. ⁠
⁠
Actually, according to the Yale Dyslexia Center, 20% of the population has dyslexia. ⁠
⁠
This means, if you have a class of 20 kids up to 4 kids could have dyslexia. And not know it. ⁠
⁠
Dyslexia is also the most common of the learning disabilities diagnosed. 80-90% of all learning disabilities diagnosed are dyslexia diagnoses. ⁠
⁠
It is the most commonly diagnosed of the neuro-cognitive disorders. ⁠
⁠
Every teacher needs a working understanding of dyslexia, and how to get dyslexic students your classroom the help they need. ⁠

Did you know that having strong reading skills doesn't necessarily make someone a reading expert?

While being a good reader is an important foundation, being a reading expert involves deep knowledge of literacy instruction methods and strategies. It involves years of study and professional learning as well as a focus on the science of how our brains learn to read.

This leads to delays in vocabulary, comprehension, knowledge and frustration. School is a really unfun place when you can't read. ⁠

If the goal of reading is comprehension and learning, decoding is a key element. ⁠
⁠
We don't hand kids a musical instrument and ask them to figure it out. So why would we do that when teaching a kid to read?⁠

For some of us learning to read is easy. ⁠

I honestly don't remember how I learned to read, but by family lore I was one of the lucky ones. The code clicked, and I read early and easily.⁠
⁠
I traveled a lot as a kid. My parents tell a story of having to take me at a young age to dinner in Paris during a trip. At the time, Parisian culture did not welcome taking kids to dinner so they got a lot of looks. But I pulled out a book and sat and read quietly so it all worked out. ⁠
⁠
But, reading is not natural. It has to be taught. ⁠
⁠
60% of kids need explicit instruction in learning to read, and even then it is hard work. ⁠
⁠
When we read, we see letters which have associated sounds. We blend those sounds to read the words. And as our skills increase we can do this faster and faster, orthographically mapping the words so that we are not decoding each word sound by sound. ⁠
⁠
But phonemic awareness is a key skill needed to be an effective reader. We have to be teaching it, especially to our struggling readers. ⁠
⁠
There's been a debate in the field of literacy with phonemic awareness lately. Should phonemic awareness be taught orally or with letters? ⁠

✨🎉 7 Years of New Paltz Multisensory 🎉✨⁠

When I decided to be a teacher, I never imagined I’d own a tutoring practice. I didn't know anyone else who had one. I was just a teacher who simply wanted to help struggling readers. I assumed the classroom would how I'd do that.
⁠
Instead, in 2018, I took a different path. Opening New Paltz Multisensory has been one of my biggest accomplishments, even if it was one I kind of stumbled into. ⁠
⁠
The past 7 years have been full of growth, challenges, and learning—especially figuring out the business side of things. There's been laughter, tears, hair pulling... but every step on the road has been worth it. For the most part!⁠
⁠
What started as a passion to support kids with dyslexia has grown into a career I wouldn’t trade for anything. ⁠
⁠
I am so grateful to the families and tutors I've had the chance to work with over the past 7 years. New Paltz Multisensory wouldn't exist without them. ⁠

I'm Heather, owner and founder of New Paltz Multisensory. We're an online and in person tutoring practice based out of New Paltz, NY.⁠

I left the classroom in 2018 as a burnt out k-2 autism classroom special ed teacher. I've always had passions for kids with special needs and literacy, so I opened the doors to New Paltz Multisensory in September 2018 hoping to be able to focus on both. ⁠
⁠
Initially it was just me, my dyslexia practictioner certification and a little office in downtown New Paltz. But the demand for our structured literacy tutoring for all kids including those with autism and ADHD meant I hired an amazing team of tutors to help me help more kids in 2020. ⁠
⁠
Here at New Paltz Multisensory, we're passionate about all things literacy, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. We are proud of working with all kinds of kids, not just those that fit a certain learning profile. ⁠
⁠
Because when you have autism and dyslexia, or ADHD and dysgraphia, sometimes getting the help you need can be a challenge. ⁠

A chance to improve the curriculum areas that felt rushed last year. ⁠

A chance to engage more students ... even the tricky ones. ⁠

A chance to start again after a (hopefully) restful summer. ⁠
