Assistant Professor, Ceramics Department
The Hartford Art School invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor
position in Ceramics beginning in fall 2020. We are seeking an exceptional artist with a
strong exhibition record and a wide range of technical skills. The position requires
teaching three courses each semester for all levels of students from freshman 3-D
Foundations through sophomore, junior and senior-level Ceramics classes. Expectations
include actively and regularly engaging in the Ceramics Department and Art School
extracurricular activities, student advising, committee service, program development, and
production of a record of creative or research activities that meet tenure requirements.
An MFA at the time of appointment or by August 2020 and a minimum of two years
teaching experience at the college level are required. The Ceramics Program
encompasses a wide range of philosophies and practices ranging from pottery and vessel
construction, to ceramic sculpture. A successful applicant will have extensive skills and
knowledge of historical/traditional clay forming and firing techniques, and the expertise
to contextualize traditional ceramic art pedagogy and contemporary concepts on art, craft,
design and culture.
Experience with CAD or the ability to learn the process is preferred.
The Ceramics department offers a BFA within the Hartford Art School’s comprehensive
undergraduate program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and
Design and is renowned for rigorous studio-based and academic programs within a liberal
arts university setting. Each of our roughly 300 undergraduate students receives personal
attention and mentoring from our dedicated faculty in a wide range of programs,
including art history, ceramics, illustration, painting and drawing, photography,
printmaking, sculpture, integrated media arts, and visual communication design. The
school also offers low-residency MFA programs in Illustration, Photography and
Interdisciplinary Art. Local museums and galleries, including the Wadsworth
Athenaeum, the New Britain Museum of American Art and Real Art Ways, support a
vibrant artistic community. The Hartford Art School is situated on the residential campus
of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut, conveniently located
