Many coyotes call Eagle Creek Park home! Highly adaptable and intelligent, coyotes live in every state (except Hawaii), and they thrive in large urban parks like ours. One of the most active areas in the park for these canids is the northern section of Eagle Creek near Lafayette Rd. and I-65 Northbound.

Over the past year, park staff have deployed trail cameras at Scott Starling and the north loop of the Red Trail to get a glimpse of the wildlife in these areas. When processing the images from these deployments, we captured hundreds of images of coyotes. One explanation for their abundance at these locations may be the fact that we also captured many photos of their common prey species: fox squirrels and eastern cottontails. The coyote pictured with this post is one of two individuals that we have been able to observe repeatedly in the area. These two individuals are likely a mating pair, which patrol, hunt, and forage together in the area.

Coyotes are most active at dawn and dusk but may be seen at any time of day. As opportunistic omnivores, their diet includes rodents, rabbits, insects, fruits, and occasionally deer. They play an important role in maintaining ecosystems by regulating prey populations. Coyotes are social creatures and typically live in small family groups and communicate through a variety of vocalizations, including howls and yips.

Coyotes at Eagle Creek Park are wild animals behaving naturally in their habitat. If you see one, observe from a distance, and remember they're far more afraid of you. Seeing them is a way to experience the park’s biodiversity and learn more about Indiana’s native wildlife.
