As part of its transition to LSU New Orleans, the University of New Orleans announced today the hiring of acclaimed New Orleans music educator and band leader Eddie Williams Jr. as the university’s new band director, marking the relaunch of a marching band program for the institution. The last time the Privateers had a marching band was in the 1970’s.
Williams brings more than two decades of experience in music education, performance leadership and program development, including leadership roles at West Jefferson High School and the nationally recognized “Marching 100” at St. Augustine High School.
“As LSU New Orleans continues to grow and evolve, creating opportunities that enrich student life and strengthen our campus’s powerful identity as a 7th Ward institution, is critically important,” said Jeanette Weiland, interim chancellor and chief administrative officer of the University of New Orleans. “Eddie is not only an accomplished educator and musician, but also a proven leader who understands the culture, energy, and traditions that make New Orleans unique. His leadership will help establish a lasting foundation for generations of future students.”

University of New Orleans Interim Chancellor and Chief Administrative Officer Jeanette Weiland announced the appointment of Michael "Gio" Giorlando, D.D.S., M.Ed., as athletic director today. Giorlando brings more than three decades of leadership experience in collegiate athletics, higher education administration and student development to the role.
Giorlando, a former assistant basketball coach at UNO and LSU and former athletic director at Loyola University New Orleans, will oversee the university's athletics programs as the institution prepares for its transition into the LSU System and its future as LSU New Orleans.
A press conference announcing Giorlando's appointment will be livestreamed at www.youtube.com/UNOPrivateers on May 28 at 1:30 p.m. at the UNO Lakefront Arena in the Spotlights Lounge.

This summer, University of New Orleans students will travel to central Italy to support a World War II recovery mission with the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).
Led by Prof. D. Ryan Gray, the team will investigate a site believed to be connected to the crash of a WWII aircraft and the loss of an American pilot. The project marks the team’s first mission in Italy and its seventh recovery mission with the DPAA.
The excavation brings together researchers, students and military cadets from several partner institutions, including the National WWII Museum, the University of Innsbruck, Tulane University and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, in a shared effort to help recover and identify missing American service members.

University of New Orleans President Kathy Johnson, Ph.D., announced today that she has accepted a new role as Executive Vice President and Provost at Saint Louis University, effective July 13.
Johnson will remain in her role as president of UNO through June 30, continuing to lead the university through the final weeks of its transition back to the Louisiana State University System.
“We are very grateful to Dr. Kathy Johnson for her leadership, service and commitment to the University of New Orleans during an important chapter in the institution’s history,” said University of Louisiana System President Rick Gallot, Ph.D.
Beginning July 1, Jeanette Weiland will serve as interim chancellor and chief administrative officer to guide the university as it returns to the Louisiana State University System. Weiland most recently served as UNO’s interim chief administrative officer, overseeing the university’s business and operational functions, including finance, university advancement, human resources, information technology, athletics, marketing and communications, and police and safety.
