The founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba (O Sensei or ‘Great Teacher’), created the art in the early 20th Century. Having practiced and mastered several martial arts, he came to believe that fighting and endless conflict is never the answer. Rather, peaceful resolution of conflict, without causing harm, is the greater path. So ‘Ai’ (harmony, love, collaboration) ‘Ki’ (power, energy) ‘Do’ (way or path) was created to provide a way of cultivating and practicing the ‘art of peace’.

Our children’s classes differ from our adult classes depending on age. For our youngest children, beginning around age 4, we offer our Peaceful Samurais program, where kids learn aikido principles through movement, breathing, stretching, and balance in the context of fun, interactive games.

We are delighted to welcome you to a Friendship Seminar with Miia Mäntysaari Sensei in September in New Orleans!

Miia Mäntysaari Sensei, 6th Dan Aikikai, a student (deshi) of Endo Shihan, embodies a style of Aikido that is soft yet powerful, emphasizing flow, connection, and presence. She teaches seminars regularly in Finland and internationally, and travels to Japan twice a year to train with Endo Sensei and his close students. Her home dojo, Kinoumi, is located in Kirkkonummi, near Helsinki.
