Tamia Randolph is a former Bricolage employee who had a huge impact in the early days of organizing BAE United. She has some words of encouragement for us as we gear up for our election. As the daughter of a retired teacher and UTNO member, Tamia knows first hand how vital it is for school workers to have a recognized union and access to collective bargaining.

“I said “yes” to a union on behalf of BAE and ALL school employees across the city of New Orleans who are eligible and willing to organize unions at their school buildings. I said “yes” because teachers are charged with nurturing and cultivating the growth of our most precious assets, our children. I said “yes” because the time is now for teachers to hold a level of power and access to collective bargaining that is equivalent to the value they hold in schools and in our society.

Our schools are society’s mirrors. Power held by few, in systems of many, is what is reflected back to me as I look. Teachers are also reflected back when I look. I see the collective “us” in them as they navigate power imbalances in their school buildings in the same way that many of us do in our daily lives.

I see Black women. Black women who serve as teachers, burdened not only with the negative and complicated impact that power imbalances in their school buildings have on their general well-being, but also the negative impact that power imbalances have in many other contexts and environments in the lives of Black women.

So, I said “yes” to union organizing on behalf of BAE and ALL. I especially said yes, however, on behalf of every Black woman who is a teacher in New Orleans so that YOU may access YOUR legal right to collective bargaining and gain the power congruent to the value that YOU and all Black women represent in our school communities. And in the local, national, and global workforce. And in society overall.”

This Labor Day, we remember and honor the struggles and accomplishments of the labor movement in this country. We remember the battles fought by workers and unions that gave us the rights we enjoy today: from the weekend, to the federal minimum wage, to FMLA, to the right to collectively organize.

We remember the Black women teachers of New Orleans, whose fight for equal pay for equal work in the 1930s gave birth to AFT Local 527. We honor the teachers, paraprofessionals, support staff and others whose work and sacrifice built the United Teachers of New Orleans.

We know that this fight is far from over. As we look at our city, we see a teaching force employed at will, overworked, underpaid, and fearful that using their voice could cost them their jobs. We see educators and students being put in harm's way by a system rushing to return to in-person schooling. We see and we lament the harm this has inflicted on the children of New Orleans because we understand that our working conditions are their learning conditions.

The Morris Jeff United Educators remain committed to providing the highest quality education for our students. We stand with the workers in every industry who fight for the safety, security, voice, and fairness denied to them by their employers. On this Labor Day, we honor those who came before us by continuing the fight for those who come after us.

Make New Orleans Schools Safe, Equitable, and Transparent 08/20/2020

Over the next week, Superintendent Henderson Lewis will meet with city health officials to make a decision about reopening our schools as early as September 8. While COVID cases have been on the decline in New Orleans, we must ask: Are our schools ready to reopen? Are we confident that the trend in cases will be a consistent one? What else can be done to ensure the safety and health of our students, families, and staff?

We ask that you take 2 minutes today to write a letter to the Superintendent, using the link below. (A sample letter is provided.)
