**Call for proposals**

The Louisiana Trust is seeking proposals for educational sessions from individuals contributing to the field of historic preservation or related fields at the local, state, and national levels to be offered at the 2027 Louisiana Preservation Conference in Natchitoches April 8 and 9.

You are invited to participate in a community engagement process to help inform the planning and preservation of Holt Cemetery, hosted by Save Our Cemeteries, a department of the Preservation Resource Center, Wake Education, and Our Mammy’s History & Genealogy. Community input will help identify preservation priorities, maintenance concerns, and opportunities to improve the cemetery while respecting its historical, cultural, and community significance.

Whether you are a descendant, family member, neighbor, preservation advocate, researcher, or someone with an interest in Holt Cemetery, your knowledge and perspective are valuable.

To encourage broad participation, two community meetings will be offered at different dates, times, and locations. Both meetings will cover the same information, so you only need to attend one.

On the banks above Bayou Bartholomew sits the Bartholomew Cemetery, an African-American burial ground used by generations of rural farming families. Historic topographic maps and aerial photos show the boundaries of a sizable rural cemetery. Vegetation began overtaking the space by the 1960s, and today, the only visible marker is that of George Reed, who served as a Technician 5th Grade during World War II. Little else remains of the community and church associated with Bartholomew Cemetery. The land has recently been cleared and offered for sale for residential development, heightening the urgency of awareness before this sacred landscape is disturbed.

Nobody knows. Every dress has a story. Every story includes the sacrifices and contributions of my ancestors. Nobody knows until I tell them. These dresses are a living memory and archive.
