ricRACK New Orleans sewing & textile recycling 501c3 nonprofit. Engaging the community to create sustainably

ricRACK was started by Alison Parker, as an idea to keep the costume culture in New Orleans as rich as it ever was. After seeing less kids at Halloween, and less in a costume, I wanted to find ways to can bring my world of costuming in film/tv/theatre to the communities of New Orleans. I also wanted to incorporate the world of repurposing, re-using, and waste reduction. There's entirely too many c

lothes, fabrics, and materials tossed away that could be re-used. There's over 14 million tons of fabrics dumped into the landfill every year. There's enough fabric manufactured each year to wrap around the earth THREE times...we have to learn to be more creative, and more resourceful...and what better way to start than with sewing and costumes!! Seats are filling up for our AMAZING fall MASTER class with Milliner and artist extraordinaire, Jan Wutowski. Jan will be in New Orleans for 2 weekends ONLY to offer her French Silk Flower making, and Feather Art and Ribbon Cockades master classes...
COSTUME SEASON IS SOON UPON US....make your own CUSTOM feathers, unique flowers, and special brocades to rejuvenate old hats, fascinators, costumes, parade outfits, derby wear, or formal wear.

French silk flower making is a two day All day master class, Oct 10th and 11th, 9:30a-4pm....all tools for heating, stiffening, curling, and shaping are provided. No experience necessary!

Feather Art and Cockades is held the following weekend, 2 day half days, Oct 17th and 18th, from 1-5pm. Students learn to cut, curl, and combine a variety of feathers to bring DRAMA to your hats and costumes!

No experience necessary for either of these MASTER classes with Jan.

This is what 1500 lbs of unwanted textiles looks like when its being diverted from the landfill!!

🤮1lb of textiles creates approximately .68 lbs of methane- a powerful greenhouse gas- when put in the landfills, even the natural fibers.
