Maroon Queen, Cherice Harrison-Nelson: A Narrative of Black Women’s Labor, Power, & Presence on view now until August 31st, 2024 We’re honored the works of Cherice Harrison-Nelson, the “un-masking” Queen of The Guardians of the Flame tribe. Tuesday marked her last time dressing out in the tradition after decades of giving herself to this life’s work. As an educator, visual artist, arts administrator, activist, actor, co-founder and curator of the Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame, her role of queendom has been joyous, but weighted, as it is a load often carried alone. Black women as a collective are familiar with this strife, of bearing the responsibility to care - for children, for community, for tradition, for unity, for feelings that are not their own. In spite of this, Black women find power in their own presence in this role. Maroon Queen honors the living legacy of Cherice Harrison-Nelson of the Guardians of the Flame, as an anchor in stewarding this tradition. 7:30PM CST I am the premiering me brand new music concert film entitled "Big Chief Brian & Nouveau Bounce - Live from Houston" directed by Royal Nation TV. It was an extreme pleasure to work with all of my bandmates and fellow filmmakers. Very special thanks to all my cousins and family and friends who came and helped me during this process. I had a whole little tribe of close family and friends taking care of me and helping. On this day and in those moments on August 31, 2024 God reminded me of how blessed I am to have my family and friends that are family. This concert could not have happened without the love and support of my beautiful wife the NEW Big Queen of the Guardians of the Flame Maroon Society, Silvana Seven Míranda. She is the wind beneath my wings. This concert could not have happened without the guidance and love of my mother Maroon Queen Cherice Harrison-Nelson. And this concert definitely would not have happened for my grandfather and elder Big Chief, Donald Harrison Sr. laying the foundation and building the cultural empire that has fed my family for generations in the past, present, and future.
