We support undergraduate students’ research initiatives, advocate for a gender-integrated curriculum, develop community engaged service-learning courses, promote student organizations, and bring feminist leaders to Tulane's campus. Newcomb Institute carries on the legacy of Newcomb College by offering a gender-inclusive educational experience in a co-educational institution.

We remember Gloria Steinem—writer, organizer, feminist leader, and a woman who helped change how generations understood gender, equality, and power.

For more than half a century, she brought feminist ideas into public life, challenged assumptions about whose voices and experiences mattered, and helped generations imagine a more equal world.

We were fortunate to experience some of that influence firsthand. Gloria spoke at Tulane in the early years of Newcomb Institute, and Newcomb students later had opportunities to meet and learn from her through Feminist Camp. One Newcomb-supported student even spent a summer helping preserve her archives for future generations. Today, our ongoing partnership with Ms. Magazine continues to bring feminist writers, scholars, and ideas into conversation with our community.

Gloria Steinem leaves an extraordinary legacy—not only in what she accomplished, but in the questions she taught generations to keep asking and the possibilities she helped them imagine.

The Outstanding Alumna of the Year is given to an alum who exemplifies Newcomb’s tradition of excellence and exhibits prominence in a business or professional field and in her contributions to the well-being of national, state, or community life.

The Newcomb Young Alumna of the Year Award is given to a Newcomb/Tulane alum under the age of 40 who has exhibited ongoing contributions or achievements.

The Newcomb Community Service Award recognizes an alum with a significant, long-term commitment to community service.

New research suggests that skepticism toward women who report sexual violence is closely tied to broader doubts and biases.

Do rising reports of sexual harassment reflect an increase in incidents of harassment, or a greater willingness to report them?

Nearly a decade after the movement reshaped public conversations about sexual harassment, a new peer-reviewed analysis from Newcomb Institute at Tulane University found that reports of past-year sexual harassment increased from 10.7% in 2018 to 24.3% in 2024.

The analysis, published in the American Journal of Public Health, cannot determine whether this reflects an increase in harassment, greater recognition of reporting, or both. What it does show is that sexual harassment remains a common experience in Americans’ lives and that preventing it must remain a priority.

Researchers also found that women continued to report higher rates of past-year sexual harassment than men and that the increase over time was greater among respondents living in the South than in other regions of the country.

Newcomb Institute coordinates with local and regional organizations to provide paid internships for undergraduates. Internship positions provide students with the opportunity to develop valuable skills, knowledge, and connections related to the fields of sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, civic engagement, and feminist leadership.

🏳️‍🌈 As we say goodbye to Pride Month, we’re reflecting on the important pieces of LGBTQ+ history housed in the Newcomb Institute Archives. Some of our favorites include:

✨The BreakOUT! records — a collection of digital photographs, videos, flyers, posters, mailers, and newsletters belonging to BreakOUT!, a New Orleans-based organization that began in 2011 with the aim of ending criminalization, harassment, and discrimination against New Orleans’ q***r and gender diverse community, with a focus on youth and communities of color.

✨The Clay Latimer papers — the personal collection of Clay Latimer, a co-founder of the first Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Coalition in Louisiana and lifelong advocate for LGBTQ+ communities.

As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this Saturday, it’s an opportunity to reflect on one of democracy’s enduring questions: How representative is our representative democracy?

Our new report examines 50 years of representation in the Louisiana Legislature, documenting how gender, race, and political representation have changed from 1976-2026.

As the nation reflects on 250 years of American democracy, these findings offer an opportunity to consider how representative democracy has evolved, and how well our elected institutions reflect the people they serve.
