This year's Under the Oaks celebration was unforgettable! We honored the accomplishments of an impressive group of graduating Newcomb scholars, leaders, interns & students, and welcomed back the Class of 1976 for their 50th reunion! Thank you to everyone who made the day so special.

Newcomb Institute carries on the proud legacy of Newcomb College, established in 1886 as the first degree-granting coordinate college for women in the United States. Generation after generation of Newcomb alumni stay connected and continue to uplift the youngest generations of graduates. The strength of the Newcomb network is truly the hallmark of our continued success. This year, in addition to the Class of 1976, we were thrilled to host members of the Emerita Club - women who graduated more than 50 year ago! Thank you to those who paved the way, and congratulations to our newest graduates. We know you have great things ahead of you!

The maternal healthcare crisis in Louisiana is getting worse. Our report finds that nearly 1/3 of our parishes are maternity care deserts, meaning that there are no birthing hospitals, birth centers offering obstetric care, or obstetric providers. We find an increase of 17.6% in maternal care deserts since 2022, and a pronounced impact on rural parishes. Read the full report: https://newcomb.tulane.edu/content/maternity-care-report-2026-report-louisiana

Thank you to the exceptional panelists who spoke yesterday on this report, on the on-the-ground challenges faced by rural communities lacking care, and on the critical role played by doulas and midwives.
