New University High School

New University High School New University High School The school was founded as a primary and secondary school. The result of the move was an immediate drop in enrollment to 70 students.

The school began with seven students in a Sunday school building in Harahan, Louisiana. By 1965 it moved into New Orleans and had over 200 students enrolled in grades one through twelve. One of the prime factors in the growth was the grant-in-aid program which provided reimbursement to anyone whose dependent was attending a non-public school. In 1967 this was declared unconstitutional and that same year the building occupoed by the school was sold, necessitating the move to 600 City Park Avenue. By 1969 enrollment had stabilized and grades one through eight were discontinued. The original intention of Dr. French was to provide a sound secondary education regardless of the student's economic status or future plans. Academically, emphasis was placed on traditional studies while the range of student backgrounds provided broad social experience. Although the school is not necessarily college preparatory the precentage of graduates attending college has risen steadily since 1969. In the last five years, the average enrollment at New University School has been 83 students per year with an average of 13 graduates in each class. During that time the physical plant has been greatly improved. In 1971 the schools library and reading room was created. In 1974 New University School was approved by the Louisiana State Board of Education.
