Digest this: 🤪 There was a huge turnout for Dr. Solch-Ottaiano’s talk about the gut-brain axis!
The event, jointly hosted by Culinary Medicine Society and the GI Interest Group, emphasized the impact of gut health on mood, cognition, digestion, and immunity. We are so grateful to Dr. Solch-Ottaiano for teaching us this important message that can be applied in both patient care and our own lives 🧠🍽️

It was all about the kiddos yesterday at Saint Baldrick’s Fest! 👫
Hosted at Manning Family Children’s Hospital, CMS arranged a matching vegetable game for the kids to play, along with fun coloring sheets and nutrition-related word searches. And of course, gave out samples of white bean blondies and crispy roasted chickpeas for a delicious snack!
The event was in support of the Saint Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds research to find a cure for pediatric cancer 💝

It’s that time of year again! 🍓🤩
Since 1972, the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival has attracted visitors from near and far to celebrate local strawberry farmers and non-profits, flourishing into the largest free harvest festival in the state of Louisiana. CMS checked it out today and we were BERRY glad we did 😉
From strawberry-glazed beignets, shortcakes, and wings, to strawberry-infused wines, whiskeys, and coffee- tomorrow is the last day to stop by for amazing food and drinks, live music, rides, and more!

On April 1st, Culinary Medicine Society had the opportunity to attend Tulane Day at the Capitol and talk to Louisiana Legislators about the impact of integrating culinary medicine into TUSOM’s healthcare curriculum 🏛️🩺
Chef Heather Nace, Dr. Ronald R. Quinton, CMS President Emily Hickman, CMS Treasurer Ian Crawford, and fourth-year medical student Jordan Lo discussed how the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine makes an impact not only in medical education at TUSOM, but in the greater New Orleans community through free cooking classes for adults, families, and children. This was an amazing opportunity to share the impact of CMS with members of the legislature including senators, house representatives, and lobbyists — there was even a special appearance by Tulane’s own President Michael Fitts!
We can’t wait for more opportunities to advocate for the importance of culinary medicine in the future. Roll wave 💚🤍🌊

Yesterday, CMS celebrated the start of T1.5 with a delicious Spring medley cooking class 🥕🍄🟫🌸
The med-chefs combined fresh, in-season produce with classic New Orleans recipes to create a true feast for the eyes (and mouths!). With dishes such as Spring Beet & Quinoa Salad, Blackened Drum, Cheesy Cauliflower Grits, Braised Chicken with Mushrooms & Leeks, and New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp - everyone's plate was filled to the brim.
To top it off, Mango Lassi Parfaits, White Bean Blondies, Morning Glory Muffins, and Lemon Olive Oil Cornmeal Cake were crafted for dessert.
Spring it on T1.5! 👊

The team spoke with community members about how to make healthier food choices, lower cholesterol, and regulate blood sugar levels. They also shared some new, spring recipes inspired by ingredients found at the market 🥕🥬🥭😋
