It’s almost time to meet our newest little pumpkin! Lucy, Audubon Zoo 14-year-old mandrill, is expecting her first infant around the end of October!

Lucy and Obi arrived at Audubon Zoo in spring 2025 following a breeding recommendation from the Mandrill Species Survival Program, which helps maintain healthy, genetically diverse mandrill populations.

Our Animal Care Team has been preparing Lucy for motherhood through maternal training, including ultrasounds, and building trusting relationships with her caretakers. A new camera system will also help the team monitor mom and baby, including nursing and maternal care, while giving them space to bond.

We can’t wait to welcome this little pumpkin!

Today, we welcomed Archbishop James Francis Checchio (Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans), Fr. Timothy D. Hedrick from St Catherine of Siena, and students from Loyola University Community Action Program to Audubon Zoo for a blessing of the animals in celebration of the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

It was a beautiful reminder that compassion connects us all. Whether we’re caring for animals or one another, looking out for others is what brings our community together.
