Loyola University New Orleans mourns the passing of Dr. Norman C. Francis, a civil rights leader and transformative president of Xavier University of Louisiana.

Dr. Francis made history as the first Black graduate of Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, earning his J.D. in 1955. In 1982, Loyola awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his extraordinary leadership and service.

He shaped generations of students and strengthened Catholic higher education in New Orleans and across the nation. His presence at Loyola marked a profound step forward in our journey toward greater justice and inclusion.

On our campus, his legacy endures in Blanche and Norman C. Francis Family Hall, a visible reminder of a life devoted to faith, scholarship, leadership, and service.

We hold his family in prayer and honor his extraordinary life of leadership and faith.
