Every child deserves a safe school, qualified teachers, updated materials, and the support needed to succeed.

Adequate funding for public education is an investment in smaller class sizes, competitive salaries, reliable transportation, student services, and strong communities.

Louisiana cannot expect better outcomes while asking schools and employees to do more with less. Our students deserve more than temporary fixes. They deserve sustained, equitable funding that reaches every classroom and supports every school employee.

Strong public schools build a stronger Louisiana. It is time to fund them like our future depends on it, because it does.

The Fall 2026 American Educator explores the roots of the affordability crisis facing working families and what we can do about it. Intentional policy choices have driven wealth and income gaps and prioritized profit over people, harming our health, safety and democracy. We’re fighting back by electing leaders who care about working families.

On this Labor Day, we share the amazing history of AFT Local 527. The climactic event that led black teachers to form AFT Local 527 occurred in direct response to this differential pay for black teachers and the differential funding for black schoolchildren. American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 527 chartered in 1937 with the explicit and noble mission of securing for black teachers equal pay to white teachers working in the same school system.

In New Orleans, LA, United Teachers of New Orleans members at Benjamin Franklin High School helped the school earn the No. 1 ranking among public high schools in Louisiana and No. 53 in the nation.
