This summer, 3L and Student Bar Association Vice President Adele Colson represented the College of Law as the American Bar Association Student Representative at the ABA's annual conference.

Adele connected with law students from across the country and was a voting member at the Law Student Assembly, where student representatives debated and voted on resolutions addressing issues in legal education and broader public policy.

"I think connecting with other law students about how they run their SBA was incredibly eye opening," she said. "We were able to talk about the problems our students face and how different SBAs are organized to best support their students. I gained a better understanding of how SBA can represent our students, but how we can deepen connections within our cities and states as well."

Congratulations to 3L Zach Dowling, who has been appointed to the national advisory council of Equal Justice Works!

Equal Justice Works brings together law students, lawyers, advocates, legal services organizations, and supporters to promote a lifelong commitment to public service and equal justice. As part of the council, Zach will build relationships with students and legal professionals across the South, promoting public interest opportunities and resources.

“Loyola's emphasis on the Jesuit commitment to solidarity, empathy, and active service to society align seamlessly with the principles of Equal Justice Works, and I am excited to use this experience as a background for my work,” he said.

As artificial intelligence permeates more of our legal and political systems, how can we keep the needs of real people at the forefront?

That's one of the questions behind Edward J. Womac, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Law Landyn Rookard's research. His latest scholarship identifies and proposes safeguards against the growing threats posed by artificial intelligence and algorithmic governance.

“The government's use of AI carries potentially significant consequences for civil rights and social justice, not to mention fascinating and complicated doctrinal issues," Prof. Rookard said.

As they return to campus, many students spent their summers using their legal skills to serve the community through paid internships.

For more than 30 years, the College of Law has facilitated representation of low-income people through the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center at Loyola's College of Law. Through paid summer internship programs in both civil and criminal law, Gillis Long matches students with legal services offices in Louisiana and throughout the United States.
