I wrote this a few years ago but it is resonating with me once again. I hope that this quarantine is giving everyone the opportunity to go inside and take time to just BE. 💕
PAPER MONSTERS
We feel the need to be constantly stimulated, avoiding the uncomfortable filling ourselves with distractions and pleasures. We encourage it in our society with the idea that being uncomfortable is negative and should therefore be avoided and suppressed. But avoiding or suppressing the uncomfortable doesn’t make it go away, on the contrary, it makes us addicted to pleasures and distractions to the point that we can’t live a single moment without them. Give this a try, I have been doing this for a few days…. Feel the need to comfort yourself? Try to not act on that feeling and sit and soak up the emotions that come up. In the end, it won’t be so bad, it will be uncomfortable but so what? Build a new relationship with that emotion, it is only “negative” because we have been taught it is so.
So how do we suppress our discomfort, you probably already have an answer to that. We suppress discomfort with TV, the internet, our phones, food, vices, s*x, and any type of over stimulation of the senses. It is the reason why it is virtually impossible for us to just sit and breathe. The most natural thing in the world for humans to do is all of the sudden virtually impossible. That on its own is a sign of just how sick we are as a society and planet.
So what is discomfort: Discomfort is our fear to look inside and get to know ourselves. We are afraid of our divinity but also our shadow. Finding stillness in discomfort is important because it allows us to get to know ourselves, our totality but it also connects us to universal guidance.
Nature, the world is dying to speak to us! It is shouting but we are so disconnected and over stimulated that we cannot listen. It doesn’t seem like a coincidence that Iquitos, the main city you pass to get to the heart of the Amazon in Peru is one of the loudest and most stimulated cities I have ever experienced. With the Amazon rainforest as a place filled with sacred energy and knowledge, people in Iquitos need that much more noise to remain oblivious to its cosmic message. And the message is…. WAKE UP!!! Stop feeding the ego before its far too late. Stop suppressing your emotions with muck, it is time to surpass that. Find stillness, reconnect.
The world is sick and we can feel it, as a reflection of our same earth, we are sick too! There is no denying it, just suppressing it. In our totality we are not just light beings of love and peace. And that is OK, what is within us is within the world and vice versa. Changing this dynamic will take us owning up to that fact. Being willing to soak and sit with the darkest aspects of ourselves. Because once we sit with discomfort, become intimate with our light and our shadow, we realize that there is nothing negative about our totality. Our shadow is simply the things we have chosen to hide from and suppress within ourselves. Little paper monsters casting big shadows.
