LSU Health School of Dentistry

LSU Health School of Dentistry Official Page Since 1972, 5,000+ dental health professionals have graduated from LSUSD. Our graduation rate is 98.9 percent.

The Louisiana Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) School of Dentistry, established in 1968, is a public school and is the only dental school in Louisiana. Its mission is to educate future general dentists, specialists and dental auxiliaries with the skill, knowledge, ethical judgment and experience to provide competent oral health care. From a national perspective, it is unique among the dental school

s in the United States because it offers degrees in dentistry, dental hygiene and dental laboratory technology. By training students in all aspects of dentistry, we offer a level of training that has resulted in the school’s reputation of providing an outstanding clinical education in addition to exemplary accomplishments in research and community service. Today nearly 75 percent of the dental health care providers in our state are graduates. The LSUHSC School of Dentistry’s mission extends beyond education and includes patient care, research and community outreach. Students and residents provide dental care to Louisiana citizens in several locations statewide and participate in a wide range of community outreach efforts to educate citizens about the importance of proper oral health care. The school also includes a specialty center of oral & craniofacial biology, the only collaborative effort in the state focused on oral health research. In addition, the school is a key provider of continuing education to dental professionals statewide. The LSUHSC School of Dentistry is one of the six schools of LSUHSC. Jeff Schluter, Coordinator of Medical Services at LSUSD for more than two decades, cares for LSUSD behind the scenes in many ways. His responsibilities include clinic deposits, chart and payment audits, patient account adjustments, and refunds. "I enjoy the people and the constant change. I see new students, new faculty, and their children come through," Jeff said.

Additionally, Jeff enjoys the beauty of nature that surrounds our campus. You'll often find him feeding the ducks, turtles, fish, and squirrels. He's also known for keeping sweet treats on hand for coworkers. "Always have a bowl of candy," he recommends.

Jeff exemplifies the spirit of community that makes LSUSD a great place to be. "Always be nice to everyone—they may need your help, or you may need theirs in some way," he advised. "Always make people happy. It makes a lasting impression on the School and those around you."

For almost 18 years, this familiar and friendly face has worked diligently behind the scenes to keep LSUSD's campus looking its best. Daniel Ross, a member of our hardworking Facility Services team, describes the School as his home away from home, where the friendly atmosphere makes coming to work enjoyable.

"I love doing the work and seeing people's reactions—like when I clean a floor or carpet, I get a lot of 'thank yous' and appreciation, and that's beautiful to me," Daniel said, noting the team effort among the School's custodians. "The patients even tell us how clean the dental school is. That makes us feel great and lets us know we're doing our jobs well."

Thank you to Daniel and the housekeeping staff for taking care of our facilities!

Continuing our spotlight on our dedicated staff who work behind the scenes, Bradley Bennett, IT Analyst, has served LSUSD for the past seven years, installing and troubleshooting computers, printers, and other technology, managing user accounts, deploying updates, and responding to technical issues for faculty, staff, and students.

What Bradley enjoys most is helping people when they need technology support. "Every day is different, so I have to be flexible, patient, and good at solving problems quickly. I really enjoy making technology easier for others to use," he said. "One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing someone go from frustrated or unsure to happy and relieved because I was able to help them. I like knowing that I can make someone's day a little easier and that my coworkers trust me to help."

Bradley, thank you for all you do to keep the School's technology running smoothly!

Lots of changes continue to take place at LSUSD as renovations progress. Although many areas are operating in temporary locations, we've still got your needs covered, including our bookstore, now temporarily located on the first floor of the Administration Building. A huge thank you to the bookstore staff for their flexibility and dedication in continuing to serve our campus community during this transition. Stop by for supplies, apparel, or a snack!

Happy National Tooth Fairy Day! Today we celebrate a beloved childhood tradition and the exciting milestone of losing baby teeth. Our LSUSD dental hygiene students often bring the magic of the Tooth Fairy to outreach events, school visits, and our pediatric dental clinic, helping children learn that healthy smiles start with daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups.
