A doula is a trained and experienced professional that provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and after birth, or in the postpartum period. A doula’s job is to completely support the pregnant woman and to help her to have an empowered and positive pregnancy, birth, and/or early parenting experience. Doula support has been shown to:

- Reduce the use of medical interventions (such as C-sections)
- Shorten labor time

Before there were pumps, apps, feeding trackers, or lactation appointments, there was community knowledge.

There were mothers, aunties, grandmothers, midwives, neighbors, and generations of people helping families learn how to nourish their babies.

That history has also been interrupted by slavery, exploitation, racism, medical mistreatment, and inequitable access to care.

And still, we nurture.

This Black Breastfeeding Week, we honor the Black families reclaiming feeding as a place of connection, autonomy, nourishment, and joy.

There is power in being able to make an informed choice about how you feed your baby,and having the support you need to carry that choice out.

August 25-31 is Black Breastfeeding Week! 🖤🤎🖤🤎

That means we’ll be celebrating and uplifting Black families this week!

For generations, Black women have nourished babies (their own and too often, others’), while navigating systems that denied them autonomy over their bodies, families, and labor.

Today, Black breastfeeding can be an act of reclamation, connection, choice, and joy! We honor the ancestors who nurtured before us and the families continuing that legacy today.
