College Beyond

College Beyond (formerly College Bridge New Orleans) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help New Orleans youth enroll and succeed in college.

College Beyond (formerly College Bridge New Orleans) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help New Orleans youth enroll and succeed in college.

Mission: College Beyond helps New Orleans youth enroll and succeed in college. We envision a city that delivers on the promise of its public K-12 system by supporting 80% of its students to degree attainment. We are guided by the belief that a 9% college graduation rate among low-income youth in America is unacceptable.

At College Beyond, we strive to live out our values of Courage, Mutuality, Excellence, Caring, and Responsibility! We do this by confronting fears and obstacles, being inclusive, setting goals of integrity, and supporting each other's well-being. We strive to talk about hard things with honesty and with love.

We are outraged and hurt by the deaths and attacks that have taken place in our black communities. However, we have hope for our young people and have been inspired by the movement of our youth across the nation speaking out and standing up against these injustices. At College Beyond we will continue to do our part by working to close the equity gap for the students we serve! We also empower our students to use their voices to enact change, especially through voting!

We have some more graduates!! 🎊🎓
Kayla Lewis is a recent graduate of the University of New Orleans. She let us know how College Beyond helped her during her time at UNO, and what she'll be up to post-graduation:

"College Beyond was so helpful my freshman year; from informing me of services I didn’t know existed to helping reduce stress. It was also great just having someone check on me who I knew genuinely cared about my health, academics & social involvement.

My major is Business Administration with a minor in Management. Right now, I’m learning how to invest in the foreign exchange market and stock market. In the fall, I start training for my yoga instructor certification. I’ll also be training to become an artistic skater through summer, fall and however long it takes! Between those I’ll be getting supplies for my body butter business."

Congratulations, Kayla!! We are wishing you all the best!

Trauma in Covid-19 - College Beyond

"We can all see how [trauma] is playing out across social media in regards to people’s responses to Covid-19: extreme distrust, rampant conspiracy theories, or even denial of the seriousness of our situation... The key is to settle your brain by disarming the fear. There are some practical strategies you can use to bring yourself a sense of control and relief." Erica P. Martinez

Ambassador Spotlight: INTRODUCING... Nathan Autry. Nathan is a current sophomore at UNO. He previously attended New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy. He enjoys video games, exercising, reading, chilling with friends, and watching movies. Nathan is also one of the newest College Beyond Ambassadors!

"I grew up in Marrero on the Westbank and spent my entire life here. I went to church often and spent a lot of time with my family. I chose UNO because it was an affordable option that was close to home, friends, and my job. Scholarships covered everything, which allowed me to save up and travel abroad, which was my dream for college ever since I was a sophomore in high school.

I have enjoyed my time at UNO because it is an overall relaxing and nice school to study at. I am relatively introverted so being on the UNO campus was always nice when I needed to study or chill out for awhile. The biggest challenge in college so far for me was overcoming anxiety, learning good time management and study skills. I have been able to study abroad in Europe, take challenging classes, and meet dozens of great teachers and friends over the course of it all and that has broadened my understanding of the world. I am truly grateful for that."

"I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was important for me to attend a university that offered an excellent HRT (Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Administration) program. UNO has one of the best in the country. I have enjoyed getting to know new individuals of many backgrounds. One of my biggest challenges this semester was transitioning to online learning. It was hard in the beginning, but with the help of some professors and my college beyond coach, I was able to adjust."
