A new report highlighted by NPR is changing the conversation around “learning loss.”
Researchers behind The Education Recovery Scorecard found that declines in U.S. math and reading scores may have started around 2013, years before the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to NPR’s reporting, Stanford researcher Sean Reardon said the last decade of test scores shows a fairly steady decline, not just a sudden pandemic drop.
COVID may have accelerated academic struggles, but many students were already experiencing foundational skill gaps long before school closures.
At Fit Learning Online, we believe this matters because struggling learners do not need more guessing, more passive instruction, or more time spent “catching up.”
They need:
• Effective instruction
• Active responding
• Fluency-building practice
• Measurable progress
• Repeated success experiences
When instruction works, students can make rapid growth and rebuild confidence at the same time.

Summer learning does not have to mean endless worksheets, screen time, or simply “keeping kids busy.”
Real progress happens when students build fluency, strengthen confidence, and experience measurable success through effective instruction.
When foundational skills become faster and more automatic, learning feels less frustrating and far more rewarding and that momentum can completely change how students enter the next school year.
Summer can either be a pause in learning or a powerful opportunity for acceleration! ☀️📚

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave individuals who served and sacrificed for our country.
We are proud to offer a military family discount for families with active or former service members as a small way to show our gratitude and support.
Thank you for your courage, sacrifice, and service. 🇺🇸

A recent NBC News article highlighted growing backlash against i-Ready, with parents, teachers, and students describing frustration, disengagement, and emotional overwhelm.
That conversation points to something much bigger than one software program.
Kids are labeled as “unmotivated” or “lazy” when the real issue is that the instruction itself isn’t working for them.
When learning feels confusing, repetitive, passive, or disconnected from real success, students begin to avoid it. When instruction is individualized, measurable, and designed to build fluency, confidence changes everything.
Students don’t need more time clicking through lessons. They need instruction that helps them experience progress, mastery, and success.
Learning should challenge kids but it should not make them miserable.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and one thing we do not talk about enough is how deeply learning and emotional wellbeing are connected.
When learners experience repeated frustration, confusion, or failure in school, it can impact far more than academics. Confidence drops. Avoidance grows. Motivation decreases. Many students begin to believe they are simply “not good at learning.”
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for a learner is:
• Check in on how they’re feeling
• Focus on progress instead of perfection
• Remind them that struggling does not mean failing
• Celebrate small wins and growth along the way
At Fit Learning, we believe effective instruction should build not only academic skills, but also confidence, resilience, and willingness to keep trying when things feel hard.
Because when learning starts to feel possible again, everything can begin to change.

Why do we just accept that kids should stop learning all summer?
For many families, summer feels like a much-needed escape from the stress and frustration of the school year. But often, that exhaustion is a sign that learning has been feeling too difficult for too long.
When foundational skills aren’t fluent, school can feel slow, overwhelming, and discouraging. Kids begin to associate learning with struggle instead of success.
But kids usually don’t need breaks from the things they feel confident doing.
That’s why summer can actually be the BEST time for skill acceleration.
With the right instruction, learners can build fluency, strengthen confidence, and return to school with the skills they need to succeed. At Fit Learning Online, many learners make dramatic academic gains in as little as 40 hours of instruction, all from home!
