Do you really know the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and donβt say βI have a dreamβ¦β
Today is the day Americans reflect on his work, but it has been watered down and white washes into throwing up quotes on peace and hope. β β
β β
Dr. King actively fought against racial intolerance and violence using non-violent methods and reading Letter From a Birmingham Jail will provide you with a deeper understanding of his willingness to fight for what's right. β β
β β
When white clergyman tried to condemn his actions and called him an extremist, Dr. King wrote Letter From a Birmingham Jail as a rebuttal.β β
β β
β...all too many others have been more cautious than courageous and have remained silent behind the anesthetizing security of stained-glass windows."β β
β β
Take time to read his letter, check my stories if you need a copy, and consider the similarities between his approach and the Black Lives Matter Movement. β β
β β
How are you committing to being courageous in the face of inequality?β β

Kwanzaa begins today. Swipe to learn more!β
β€οΈπ€πβ β β
β
Founder: Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 during the aftermath of the Watts riots as an African-American holiday. Karenga said his goal was to "give blacks an alternative to the existing holiday [of Christmas] and give blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society."β β β
β€οΈπ€πβ β β
β
Meaning: The word Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning "first fruits." First fruits festivals exist in Southern Africa, celebrated in December/January with the southern solstice, and Karenga was partly inspired by an account he read of the Zulu festival Umkhosi Wokweshwama. It was decided to spell the holiday's name with an additional "a" so that it would have a symbolic seven letters.β β β

β
Each day focuses on a different principle, Nguzo Saba, that participants reflect on while lighting the Kinara (a candle holder). β

Todayβs edition of my has me thinking about my first foray into apparel that puts my passion for culturally responsive and inclusive education front and center.
Putting children over content means honoring the needs of your students and putting them first. Centering the learning process on elevating their voice to create transformational learning communities.
How do you put your studentβs needs first?
