One of the biggest challenges in dementia care is recognizing when memory changes are more than normal aging.
According to the Louisiana ADRD State Plan, many primary care providers report difficulty distinguishing mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease from typical age-related changes. That’s why education, early detection training, and awareness of warning signs are so very important; for everyone.

The month of May is historically dedicated to Older Americans Month, established back in 1963 to promote community support, independence, and health. This year, the theme is Champion Your Health, focusing on prioritizing preventive healthcare, maintaining social connections, and speaking up about changes in memory or behavior – because healthy aging starts with you.
A simple way to put this into practice is to combine movement with connection. Go for a walk with a friend, join a group class, or take part in a community activity where you can stay active while spending time with others. It’s a great way to support both your physical and emotional well-being.

Dementia doesn’t happen overnight – risks build quietly, over time.
Research from The Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care suggests up to 40% of cases may be prevented or delayed by addressing risk factors. And most Americans have at least one.
In Louisiana, these factors are especially common, making risk reduction critical for our communities.
This is why risk reduction matters.

This Sunday, May 10th is a day set aside to honor the people who brought us into this world: our moms. For families caring for someone living with dementia, Mother’s Day can still be meaningful, even if it looks a little different. It’s not about doing more – it’s about being present and connected.
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) shared a few simple, dementia-friendly ways to celebrate, including reminiscing together, adapting old favorites, giving flowers, or making a homemade card. These moments are not expensive, they just require time, patience, and care. And even when they aren’t fully understood in the traditional sense, they can still carry deep emotional meaning to your mom.
If you’re looking for one place to start, try making a Mother’s Day card together. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to come from you.
