Loyola Wolf Pack Athletics is making a historic return! Today Loyola announced its provisional membership to NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference welcoming supporters and athletics alum from some of its teams that competed in the NCAA.
Starting competition in fall of 2027, Loyola will become the first Division II school in Louisiana, after officially accepting an invitation to join the Gulf South.
Loyola previously competed in the NCAA from 1921-1972 before athletics was suspended. In 1991, athletics returned with baseball and began sponsoring women's sports programs as members of the NAIA. Over the last 35 years, athletics has achieved significant growth and success on the courts and fields, including a men's basketball national title in 2022.
Loyola looks to begin the 2-year provisional process this fall to become a full NCAA D2 member in 2029-30.

Howl! 🐺 We’re to spotlight newly sworn-in Winter Park City Commissioner and Loyola alum, Elizabeth Ingram. A lifelong Winter Park resident, Elizabeth first got involved in local advocacy when she organized her neighbors and successfully spoke out against a commercial upzoning project that threatened the safety and character of her neighborhood, turning concern into action at City Hall. Since then, she has continued serving her community through advocacy on the Public Art Citizen Advisory Board, leadership as President of the Dommerich Elementary PTA, and involvement with treasured local institutions like Mead Botanical Garden and the Winter Park History Museum. A graduate of Loyola University New Orleans, Elizabeth combines her background in education, music, and civic leadership with a deep commitment to preserving Winter Park’s historic charm while planning responsibly for the future. From the classroom to community boards to the campaign trail, she represents the kind of thoughtful, service-driven leadership that makes the Wolf Pack proud. 💛🐺

Together, with the community, we mourn the loss of Reverend James C. Carter, S.J., Ph.D., Loyola's longest-serving president and one of the most influential leaders in our history.
Loyola University New Orleans mourns the passing of Reverend James C. Carter, S.J., Ph.D., the longest-tenured president in the university’s history, serving graciously for 21 years.
Father Jim Carter, S.J. spent 75 years as a member of the Loyola community, first as a student, then as a physics professor, before joining the university's administrative staff. He served as president from 1974 to 1995, and rejoined the Wolf Pack as pastoral minister and part-time science, religion and physics teacher in 2004. His course, “Faith, Science and Religion,” became one of the university’s most popular classes, as Father Carter, well into his 90s, continued to inspire students with his wisdom, humor, and curiosity.
Known for his teaching and commitment to making education accessible to all, Father Carter transformed Loyola from a commuter school into the iconic campus footprint the Loyola community enjoys today. He is fondly remembered by students and staff for his wisdom, humility, sincerity, civic service, and sense of humor.
Reflecting on his presidency years later, Father Carter said, “The thing that meant the most to me was the effort to maintain our Jesuit and Catholic identity.”
Father Jim Carter, S.J., embodied the very spirit of Loyola, and his legacy will continue to shape the university for generations to come.
Thank you, Father Carter, for your devotion to the Wolf Pack and to a life of service and faith.
