This small shrub is one of our native American Beautyberries (Callicarpa americana) at at the Askew Student Life Center. This plant can be found in all 67 counties of Florida in a variety of habitats. The flowers provide nectar for butterflies and bees and the fruit is enjoyed by birds and deer. The fruit is edible but doesn't have much flavor when eaten raw but makes a good jelly. The Seminole, Creek and Choctaw used Beautyberry roots and fruit for medicinal purposes. Extracts from the plant have shown usefulness in repelling mosquitoes and fire ants as well as having antibacterial properties.
