Canterbury School in New Milford, CT

Canterbury School in New Milford, CT A college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12 But boarding school life offers something even more special.

Founded in 1915 and guided by lay Roman Catholics, Canterbury is a college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12. The School prides itself on creating a community based on its five values - honesty, respect, compassion, spirituality, self-reliance – where students and faculty forge lasting bonds and every student experiences a broad and challenging program in a small school setting. The School’s educational environment fosters academic rigor, athletic development, artistic enrichment, and spiritual growth and strives to ensure a superior experience that prepares students for leading colleges and universities and for life. With its rigorous and humane approach to students, both in and out of the classroom, Canterbury’s program inculcates vital intellectual and ethical habits of mind. The School sees all students as individuals, encourages them as necessary, challenges them as appropriate, and inspires them to become moral leaders in a complex, secular world. The energy and friendliness of the Canterbury community make a lasting impression on visitors to campus. We enroll students from a wide range of backgrounds who enrich school life with their varied interests and talents. The home-like atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, and warmth of students and faculty help new students feel welcome here. Our 150-acre campus above the town of New Milford, with views of the Litchfield Hills, is an inspiring setting. Walking to class each morning on the path to the Old Schoolhouse, you will be tempted to stop and take in the beauty. Our outstanding facilities for academics, athletics, and the arts, as well as our location, define the campus. Living and learning with your peers and teachers in a community is an education in itself. In the dormitories, on the playing fields, and in the dining hall you will meet people from all over the United States and countries around the world. Days at Canterbury are full, but there is time for a game of pick-up lacrosse or a pizza party back at the dorm. On the weekends, you can join friends at a dance on campus, attend movies, shop at the mall, or head off to Boston or New York on school-sponsored trips to museums or the theater. The best way to experience our vibrant community is in person. We encourage you to schedule a campus tour and personal interview or a day of classes, where one of our Admission ambassadors will give you a tour, show you some classes in action, and make sure you meet other students and teachers. You will see a dorm room, eat a meal in Steele Dining Hall, and experience firsthand the excitement of living and learning at Canterbury. Either way, we are ready to welcome you and introduce you to our beautiful hilltop campus.

On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Saints gathered to pray for those lost and to remember one of our own. Romain de Plas ‘89 painted the Twin Towers nine times before his death in 2002.

Our thanks to Romain’s mother, Bobbie Gootrad, who has loaned a collection of her son’s work to Canterbury, including all eight surviving paintings from the 9/11 series.

Read his full story at the link in our bio, and see more photographs from the exhibition in our Flickr album. The paintings hang in the Edward J. Duffy Family Art Gallery through September 30.

Big news for Saints hockey! 🏒 We’re excited to welcome our Interim Head Coaches for the 2026–27 season.

Coach Dan Fridgen is the winningest head coach in RPI history, leading the Engineers to an ECAC Championship and NCAA Tournament while developing NHL draft picks and professional players. A Colgate standout, he broke 15 school records before joining the Hartford Whalers organization.

Coach Katie Mandigo returns to the Canterbury program she led from 2017–21. A standout dual-sport athlete at Middlebury, she was a women’s hockey assistant captain, NCAA finalist, and NESCAC Champion; in lacrosse, she won a national title and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Both coaches understand what it takes to develop as a player, compete at a high level, and pursue opportunities in collegiate hockey.

Welcome to Canterbury, Coach Fridgen—and welcome back, Coach Mandigo!
