We are excited to be partnering with Helping Hands and Caring Hearts to once again bring free summer lunches for kids in northern Frederick County and the mountain top area.

Stop by the school between 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM every Tuesday starting June 23.

Please take one bag per child. Each bag contains five lunches to help provide meals throughout the week.

As the school year wraps up, we want to take a moment to thank the board members who are moving on to middle school. A very special thank you to Michelle Matusiak, our treasurer, and Katie Russell, our secretary, for all of their hard work, time, organization, and support. You have both played such an important role in helping our PTA run smoothly, and we are so grateful for everything you have done for NMES.

We also want to give a huge thank you to Kim Bicknell, our PTA President, for her leadership, dedication, and heart throughout the year.

And of course, we could never say thank you without recognizing Claire Cawthon. She is a person who shows up, jumps in, keeps things moving, and helps make so many of our PTA events and efforts possible. We truly could not do what we do without her.

PTA is a team effort, and we are so thankful for everyone who has served, volunteered, supported, and helped make this year so special for our students, staff, and families. We are excited to carry that same spirit into the 2026–2027 school year!

β€’ 𝑻𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒖𝒔 𝒂 π’π’Šπ’•π’•π’π’† 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 π’šπ’π’–π’“ π’‡π’‚π’Žπ’Šπ’π’š. π‘²π’Šπ’…π’”, π’ˆπ’“π’‚π’…π’† 𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒔, π’‰π’π’˜ π’π’π’π’ˆ π’šπ’π’–β€™π’—π’† 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑡𝑴𝑬𝑺 π’„π’π’Žπ’Žπ’–π’π’Šπ’•π’š, 𝒆𝒕𝒄. I'm a mom to three: Elizabeth will be in 4th grade, Mabel will be in second, and Nicholas is a newborn. My husband George and I moved to New Market a few years ago when Elizabeth was in Kindergarten, and I've slowly been becoming more involved in the NMES community.

β€’ 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 π’Žπ’‚π’…π’† π’šπ’π’– π’˜π’‚π’π’• 𝒕𝒐 π’ˆπ’†π’• π’Šπ’π’—π’π’π’—π’†π’… π’˜π’Šπ’•π’‰ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝑻𝑨? It started when I was laid off from my job and I decided to take the opportunity to become more involved in the school. My mom was always super involved in the PTA while I was growing up, and now, as a mom, I see how much of an impact it made, and how it helped her stay in the loop with what was going on in our lives- and I want that with my kids!

I started volunteering for special events like the Staff Basketball Game, the Bike Rodeo and Bingo, and going in once a month to make copies for the 3rd grade teachers. Through the girls, I became friends with other parents in the PTA and found myself becoming more involved, especially as their step-dad Brandon became more involved.. because it's always easier to do something new when you have a friend doing it with you!

β€’ 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 π’šπ’π’– π’Žπ’π’”π’• π’†π’™π’„π’Šπ’•π’†π’… 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 2026-2027 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍 π’šπ’†π’‚π’“? Personally, I'm excited to spend more time contributing to the amazing NMES community. There are so many wonderful teachers, staff, and parents working to create fun, engaging events for the students, and while one person can't do it all, every one can do something!

β€’ 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 π’Šπ’” 𝒐𝒏𝒆 π’•π’‰π’Šπ’π’ˆ π’šπ’π’– 𝒉𝒐𝒑𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝑻𝑨 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑 π’˜π’Šπ’•π’‰ 𝒐𝒓 π’ƒπ’“π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍 π’„π’π’Žπ’Žπ’–π’π’Šπ’•π’š π’•π’‰π’Šπ’” π’šπ’†π’‚π’“? I love the community - building focus of many of the events, and hope to help facilitate more of those. Creating community and building a village is so important for both the kids and ourselves as parents, and I view the PTA work as one way to show up & be a villager.

β€’ 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 π’Šπ’” π’šπ’π’–π’“ π’‡π’‚π’—π’π’“π’Šπ’•π’† 𝑡𝑴𝑬𝑺 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕, π’•π’“π’‚π’…π’Šπ’•π’Šπ’π’, 𝒐𝒓 π’Žπ’†π’Žπ’π’“π’š? There are so many! Every event we attend ends up being so much fun. We did both the Trunk or Treat and the Cindy Alvarado 5K for the first time this year. I loved doing BINGO, and the school dances are always a highlight. Mostly I just love that the girls are still at an age where they want us around and attending these events with them.

β€’ 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 π’Šπ’” π’”π’π’Žπ’†π’•π’‰π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒇𝒖𝒏 𝒐𝒓 π’”π’–π’“π’‘π’“π’Šπ’”π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 π’Žπ’‚π’š 𝒏𝒐𝒕 π’Œπ’π’π’˜ 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 π’šπ’π’–? I grew up in South Jersey and while I still consider myself a Jersey Girl at heart, as of this year, I've officially spent more than half of my life in Maryland! I moved here in 2007 to attend Hood College, and I never really left. My favorite Maryland-specific experience is a crab feed- despite not really liking crab! I love the vibes of a summer afternoon/evening spent hanging out & picking crabs with good friends, music, food & drinks.

β€’ π‘­π’‚π’—π’π’“π’Šπ’•π’† 𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆, π’‰π’π’ƒπ’ƒπ’š, π’”π’π’‚π’„π’Œ, 𝒄𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒆 𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓, 𝒐𝒓 π’˜π’‚π’š 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒂 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆 π’…π’‚π’š? I love that New Market has such family-friendly dining options available. The Derby has become our go-to, especially on warm days when the girls can end up running around and playing with other kids. We just visited Sunset on Main for the first time and absolutely loved it- I can tell they're going to become a family favorite too!

Calling All 5th Grade Families!

As our 5th graders get ready to take the exciting next step to middle school, we wanted to share an opportunity for families who may be interested in staying involved.

The middle school PTSA is a great way to stay connected, meet other families, and help support students, teachers, and school events next year.

They currently have open positions available, so this is a wonderful time for incoming families to learn more and consider getting involved.

We encourage you to follow along on their social media page for updates, volunteer opportunities, meeting information, open positions, and ways to support the school community as your student transitions to middle school.

I understand the busy schedules and challenges families face, and I want PTA to feel welcoming and accessible for everyone.
