To Chris Soto and the DREAMers - Keep up the good fight!!

When students pay tuition, they deserve to access the financial aid that they pay into... that shouldn't be up for debate. Today I was proud to stand with our brave DREAMers who are looking to realize the promise of higher education.

Take Me There Tuesday!!

In researching schools for a kiddo we are working with who is interested in either becoming an electrician or welder, we found several schools that offer such programs. But what we found more exciting is that these are traditional schools, not TECH schools. And they are community colleges that offer housing! Check out our choice of the week, Dutchess Community College, part of SUNY, at www.sunydutchess.edu

Applying for and understanding the financial aid packages is often the most difficult piece of the college application process. Kudos to our State Rep. Chris Soto for introducing a bill that would standardize financial aid letters from CT's state universities.

New London – Freshman State Rep. Chris Soto, D-New London, has wasted little time in pitching his ideas to the General Assembly, introducing,

Wisdom Wednesday -
For those who have pressed submit, college acceptance letters are being sent out. But keep this in mind - Not all college acceptance letters come in the mail. College admission counselors are aware of the fact that students today are attached to their phones so pay attention to text messages and emails because some schools will say "YES" via text before sending out the traditional "big" envelope. It is also important to read any email received from a college applied to as it will contain links to checking application statuses or details about missing information.
.. But if you haven't received that "YES!" yet, don't worry! Many colleges don't begin sending out notifications until the end of February. So Good Luck!! And Stay Positive!!

Wisdom Wednesday:
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EARLY DECISION & EARLY ACTION? Students may only apply to one school as "early decision" and this application is generally submitted by November 15. Applicants will receive a decision in December and if accepted; students must attend this school and withdraw all other applications. This application type is recommended for students who have a firm first choice school and are almost guaranteed a spot. With "early action", students may apply to more than one school this way. And while admission decisions will come early; students have until May 1 to make their final decision. Applying early just gives peace of mind.
So whether you choose to apply early or by the regular deadline date, it's important to start getting application materials ready now.
