You can’t spell street without a tree in the middle! Returning Camels might notice new street signs throughout campus - some of which have tree names, chosen by our own Arboretum Director! In this new series, we thought we could take a look at how these streets got their names :)

The road encircling campus is now called the Elm Loop Rd, and how fitting! Conn’s first seal featured an elm tree, and they were one of the first trees on campus - Professor Caroline Black ordered 100 (for $1 each!) in 1921 to line our major roads.

While most of these trees were lost in the 20th century due to Dutch Elm Disease, a fungus that wiped out 77% of US populations by 1989, this one at the Williams St entrance is likely original, as confirmed by imagery in the archives.

Join us this Wednesday, August 19th at 5:30pm for our Native Plant Home Demonstration Garden Walk at 33 Gallows Lane in New London to learn about how you can landscape around your home using native plants.

This program is free and open to the public.
