Penn State’s Biomedical Engineering Technology (BET) program prepares students for careers in Healthcare Technology Management through hands-on experience and coursework focused on technology, problem-solving and healthcare. BET graduates are working in HTM roles across the industry, including 43 Penn State BET graduates currently working at TRIMEDX.

Penn State New Kensington faculty member Courtney Cole, assistant teaching professor of engineering, presented research at the 2026 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference, held June 21-24 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Cole presented the paper, “Designing for Climate Resilience and Adaptation with Electric Power Systems in Engineering Design Teams,” a collaborative research project with Laura Cruz, research professor at the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence at University Park. Read more 🦁🔗:

During Healthcare Technology Management Week, we’re proud to spotlight Tyler Schwenning, a graduate of Penn State New Kensington's Biomedical Engineering Technology program!

These days, Tyler works for Bayer as a senior systems engineering technician within research and development, where he manages contrast injector prototypes and supports the testing and refinement of devices still in development.

Biomedical Engineering Technology gave Tyler a way to step into a highly technical career focused on the medical devices health care professionals rely on every day. The success of our graduates and the impact they continue to have on our communities will be felt for years to come.

For Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) Week, we’re proud to highlight Sam Gormont, a graduate of our Biomedical Engineering Technology (BET) program.

Sam works as a biomedical equipment technician at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. His day-to-day work includes repairing medical equipment and completing preventive maintenance work orders to keep health care technology running safely and reliably.

The work is technical, hands-on and often requires a problem-solving mindset. Sam said one of the most valuable skills he developed through the program was troubleshooting.

“Figuring out the problem is the best part, and it is so rewarding when you fix something,” Sam said. “Another skill is communication. In this field, you must communicate clearly with staff.”

He was drawn to the program because of the close-knit nature of the biomedical equipment field and found the specialized nature of the degree helped him enter the workforce with a strong understanding of the industry and the role biomedical equipment technicians play in patient care.

He recommends the program to students who enjoy taking things apart, identifying what is wrong and putting them back together.

“Lots of repairs are like puzzles in that we need to figure out the cause of the error,” he said. “This program is worth it because of the high job placement, decent pay, and the communication and troubleshooting skills you develop throughout the journey.”
