🔥 Building Skills for Life

On Tuesday, students participating in the Fire Starter Project Class IX came together for the program’s annual Life Skills Day, spending the day learning practical skills designed to serve them well beyond the classroom.

Throughout the event, students explored everything from car maintenance and healthy living to etiquette, social media, and managing their digital footprint, with an escape room activity and time for reflection mixed in along the way.

A special thank you goes to Arceneaux Ford Inc. , The Gym of New Iberia, LLC , Jodie Garritt, and TDR Business Solutions for sharing their time, knowledge, and real-world experience with these students. Opportunities like this are possible because local businesses and community members are willing to invest in the next generation.

And congratulations to the students who participated! Thank you for showing up ready to learn, ask questions, try something new, and make the most of the experience.

It takes a community working together to prepare students not only for graduation, but for life beyond the classroom. 💙💚

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Carla Bryan | Coteau Elementary

After 19 years with IPSD, Carla Bryan has learned that some of the best parts of working in a school are the relationships that grow along the way.

At Coteau Elementary, Carla loves interacting with students, forming bonds, and knowing everyone by name. She even brings a little fun to the morning announcements by sharing a joke each day! Students regularly stop by with their own jokes, hoping theirs will earn a spot on an upcoming announcement.

For Carla, those connections extend far beyond the school day. She describes the students as “my kids from 8:00–3:30,” and many of the relationships formed at Coteau have grown into lifelong friendships. That sense of connection comes naturally in a close-knit community where so many families have grown up together.

Education also runs in Carla’s family. Her mother spent 30 years as a teacher and, as Carla puts it, “set the bar.”

Her advice to students is to begin every new school year with an open mind and a willingness to learn something new—you just might discover something you never knew you would enjoy.

Outside of school, Carla loves bird watching and even leaves treats out to keep her feathered visitors happy.

When asked what makes Coteau Elementary special, Carla shared a fitting reminder of the impact educators can have:

“The people who walk through the door change lives and make a difference.”

Thank you, Carla, for 19 years of building relationships, sharing laughs, and making a difference for generations of IPSD students!

We are extremely proud to have Iberia Parish School District recognized by One Acadiana with the 2026 1A ConnectEd Award. This recognition reflects exactly what we want to accomplish for our students, connecting what they learn in the classroom with real opportunities for their future.
In just one year, our Workforce Development Program has grown from an internship course into a true partnership between our schools and local business and industry. Nine students completed the program in its first year, five were hired into full-time positions, and more than 90 students have applied to participate during the 2026–27 school year. Those numbers tell us that our students see the value in these opportunities, and our local employers do as well.
This work is about more than preparing students for their first job. We are helping them develop the skills, experience, and relationships they need to build successful careers while also helping create the workforce that will continue to strengthen local industry and move Iberia Parish forward.
Ultimately, our hope is that our young people will see that they do not have to leave Iberia Parish to find opportunity. We want them to be able to graduate, build meaningful careers, and one day live, work, and raise their own families right here at home. That is what makes this recognition especially meaningful to us.

🏈 It’s Bayou Bowl Game Day!

Tonight, two Iberia Parish rivals meet on the field as New Iberia Senior High takes on Westgate High School in the 2026 Bayou Bowl!

Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at NISH, with JV and Varsity teams getting their chance under the Friday night—well, Thursday night—lights!

Come out, show your school spirit, and support our student-athletes as the Yellow Jackets and Tigers kick off another exciting season of IPSD athletics.

Good luck to both teams, and have a great game!

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Gail Comeaux | Jefferson Island Road Elementary

Since 2009, Gail Comeaux has been a familiar face within IPSD, and one of her favorite parts of the job is simply getting to meet all the people who come through the doors.

At Jefferson Island Road Elementary, there’s rarely a dull moment. Gail especially treasures the little surprises students bring her throughout the day—sometimes returning from their classrooms with a fun gift to share, a story to tell, or simply a smile. And according to Gail, working in the front office also means hearing plenty of “tea” because “kids tell us everything!”

Over the years, she’s experienced her share of memorable moments, including one particularly tough student who managed to break his leg brace and seemed completely unfazed by it!

Gail credits Ms. Phillys, who served in the role before her, as an important mentor. She learned by watching her, and their connection continues today with Ms. Phillys still stopping by to visit.

Her advice to students is one worth remembering: “Do your very best. That’s all anyone can ask.”

While Gail admits public speaking is definitely not her thing, she feels right at home at JIRE. When asked what makes her school special, her answer was easy:

“We are a family here.”

And now, a special message from Mr. Tom Tharp, our Child Search and Transition Coordinator :

"IVEER Staff of the Year!

I am excited to recognize three outstanding members of our IVEER team as our 2026–27 Staff of the Year recipients!

For those who may not be familiar with IVEER, it is a special education program designed to help students build independence, work skills, life skills, and real-world job experience while preparing them for life after high school. Our staff work every day to help students discover their strengths, develop confidence, and become as independent as possible.

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Jessica Reyes | Iberia Middle School

For Jessica Reyes, her first year with IPSD has been filled with something new around every corner—and that’s exactly what she’s enjoying about it.

Jessica loves learning new skills and spending her days interacting with students and coworkers. She describes the camaraderie among the IMS staff as one of her favorite parts of the job, joking that being around the students helps keep everyone young: “They’re lovely.”

She’s also quickly discovering just how unique the role of a school secretary can be. Secretaries become the keepers of names and faces, learning the people who make up their school community and getting a glimpse into their lives along the way. For Jessica, those connections have also taught her the importance of finding a balance between a little tough love and a bleeding heart.

Her advice to students is simple and practical: Be yourself, be on time, be responsible, and remember that honesty is key.

Outside of school, Jessica loves to read and even writes short stories of her own!

When asked what makes Iberia Middle School special, Jessica didn’t hesitate—the staff. She describes the people around her as hardworking, endearing, and funny, making her first year with IPSD an exciting one already.
