The best aerobic session at Williams doesn’t happen on the water. Or the erg.
Patrick Dent, assistant coach for Williams men’s rowing, has his squad on Nordic skis through the winter. Huge engine work, without the metres piling up on your back, and his athletes come through the winter healthy and ready to race.
With four or five recruiting spots a year, Williams needs every single person on the roster contributing. Training that builds fitness and keeps people available is how you get there.

As long as you’re showing progression, you have a shot.”
Oliver Willet: Greenwich Crew → Penn: on the one thing he’d tell every recruit:
Reach out to more coaches. A lot of athletes never send the email because they don’t think they’re qualified. But coaches aren’t looking for perfect, they’re looking for improvement. No matter where you are, if you’re trending up, you’re in the conversation.

Want to get in front of coaches like the ones Oliver reached out to? Our ID camp this month is the place to do it.

If you want it bad enough, the sky really is the limit.”
Olympic medalist Griffith (Yale ‘17 · 🥉 Tokyo · 🥈 Paris) on the two things that matter most in recruiting:
1️⃣ Look past the name. Programs can seem identical from the outside, but each has its own culture. Find the one that actually fits you, that’s where you’ll get the most out of yourself physically and academically.
2️⃣ Progress isn’t linear. It’s easy to see someone with a bigger erg or a better result and think they’ll pass you by. Don’t be disheartened. He was a 17-year-old pulling 6:28, nowhere near where he’d end up. He just kept showing up.
Finding the right cultural fit is the hard part, and it’s exactly where we help. DM us to start mapping your options.

Recruiting isn’t just erg scores, it’s relationships.
Brown’s coaching staff on why the ID camp matters: it’s your chance to show coaches how you move on the egregious and in the tank, and actually speak with the show your character to the coaches recruiting you. As Coach Biggs puts it, “seeing athletes there, watching them compete, and building that connection in person is one of the most important parts of the journey”.
Our end-of-August ID camp is your way in. Spots are limited.

Erging is not just about raw power.
So much more of it is technique and efficiency. The athletes pulling the big winter scores are the ones who waste the least.
Get these habits in now, while there is no pressure on the clock. Sequence, connection, rate control, the boring stuff. By the time you sit down for your next 2k, you will unlock a few extra seconds.
And those seconds are the ones that get you recruited.
Swipe through, then pick one habit to take into your next session.

We asked Emma at Rutgers what she actually wants from recruits. Her answer surprised a lot of people 👇
Not the quarterly essay. Not five races, erg scores, and a Google Drive link to four rowing videos dropped after four months of silence.
Short. Consistent. Updates that keep her in the loop.
In her words: “I prefer the short messages that keep me updated, because I hear from you more and we’re able to build a better relationship”
The lesson for every recruit: consistency beats volume. A quick message after a good result keeps you on a coach’s radar. Coaches recruit people they know. Stay in touch.

Before an official visit, athletes must do an academic pre-read. Every Ivy runs on more or less the same calculation.
The part most people miss: it works in your favour too. Not everyone in an Ivy squad is going 6:10, or 7:20 on the women’s side. If you stand out in the classroom this can help boost your chances of being recruited.
Pre-reads typically happen in July / August and then coaches start inviting athletes on official visits. Usually 30 to 50 athletes per program.
