The newest Launchpad Scholars have started their yearlong journey toward applying to law school.

Coming together from around the country last month, the 25 new scholars converged in New York City for the program’s welcome summit. Program sponsor Latham & Watkins hosted the two-day event.

Over the next year, program participants will attend virtual workshops on leadership and career preparedness, receive admissions exam preparation, and have opportunities for mentorship. The program culminates in June with a week at Yale Law School, where students will practice interviews, work on their application essays, and meet Yale Law School faculty and leaders in the legal profession.

The Launchpad Scholars Program provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to apply to and enroll in law school and succeed in careers in law.

An unsuccessful 20-year quest to remove traffic lights blamed for clogging traffic and causing frequent crashes on a busy Connecticut road was among the real-world problems students examined in a course taught by Professor Zachary Liscow last year.

Now that research is online, published recently by Yale's Tobin Center for Economic Policy. Students also had a chance to present their research to current and former government officials last year.

The fall 2025 course, Connecticut Policy Lab, studied the legal foundations of state government effectiveness. Students' final papers delved into issues including how to speed up the state's hiring process and why high-speed rail along the East Coast is so slow through Connecticut.

“The main point of the class, of course, is learning, but maybe we'll also make a difference on the ground by helping people inside government make Connecticut work better,” Liscow said.

As a first generation college student — and now, law student — an important question for Adeline Navarro ’29 is this: who has access to the law?

“What led me to law school is that I really want to democratize access to the law and to think creatively about the role of a lawyer in communities and in social movements.”

As an undergraduate, Adeline studied philosophy and went on to earn a master’s degree in the discipline. As she studies law, she wants philosophy to continue to be part of her work.

“At Yale, I really like the fact that I can pursue both of these interests — all of these interests — at the same time.”

Working in medical ethics research made Nathaniel Mamo ’29 want to do something about healthcare. He decided that law school was the place to learn how to get it done, “specifically Yale because I see a lot of doers coming out of the school.”

He said he can’t wait for intellectually challenging conversations in his small group. He’s even looking forward to something students usually hope to avoid: embarrassing himself in class. He said that’s how he’ll know he’s in a safe place to make mistakes.

“This is a place to maximize your success. I think it's also a place to maximize mistakes. And that's how you're going to start learning.”

While getting her masters in public health at Yale, Sophia DeLuca ’29 took a few courses here at Yale Law School. As she got deeper into public policy, she realized that studying law should be her next step.

“I wanted to have a legal toolbox and understanding of how the legal system worked, and especially how civil rights and public health go together.”

How did she know Yale Law School was right for her?

“I know there’s a really strong emphasis on both health and civil rights law, and I'm excited to learn from professors in those areas and get the practical clinical experience as well.”

An alumni panel at orientation has already expanded her idea of what a lawyer can be.

“It's interesting to hear about different legal careers that I wasn't aware of and aren't in my concept or scope of what a lawyer does.”

Meet our new students!

Coming to Yale Law School marks a career pivot for Jack Kirakos ’29, who served five years in the United States Air Force working in intelligence.

“I’m really interested in financial regulation. I’d love to work at the intersection of finance and government – particularly the Federal Reserve, SEC, or FTC.”

He hopes to join the Law School's Financial Markets and Corporate Law Clinic, and is especially excited to engage with constitutional law over the next three years as a J.D. student.

One of the hardest parts of leaving the Air Force was saying goodbye to the people he knew there, Jack added. But the class of 2029 is already shaping up to be “a group of amazing people,” he said.

“Just from orientation, I can tell I'm going to be very happy here.”

Meet our new students!

Grace Duffy ’29 became interested in the law when she worked at an immigration nonprofit.

"I saw the power that lawyers could bring to the immigrant rights movement through movement-centered lawyering."

She chose Yale Law School in part for its clinical offerings, in which students can assist with real cases and real clients as early as spring of their first year.

In the meantime, she said, "I'm really excited to explore campus and find beautiful study spots in the different libraries."
