Integration of Information Technologies
Neurophysiological algorithms consist of thousands of neural ensembles interconnected between different brain regions that shape child's actions, thoughts, decisions and confidence in his decisions. Music has a complex coding system in which there are many precise mathematical elements :duration, interval, scale, pitch, rhythm, frequency and their relationship. Reading musical notation is a multimodal integration of different brain regions involved at the same time. The variable of neural signals from brain areas involved in learning and memory describes the activity happening in the brain preceding a decision making between effort and keystroke accuracy. Some of these internal latent neural states can be calculated out and identified with high mathematical precision. Convert the elements of music notation through Digital Key to engage a large number of unique neurons and achieve the desired learning effect.

The method of Digital Key joins the visual analyzer with neuro-motor function of hands and explains, from scientific point of view, the ratio between the load on muscles of eyes and muscles of hands, and also it proves the development of muscular fatigue in hands depending on quantity of eyeballs’ fluctuations. In this study the involved neural and cognitive processes of cortical mechanisms allow to connect brain networks into a coherent neural center.
The study topic covers both fundamental concepts of neural coding and signal processing at various levels along side the audio-visual-motor synchronization as well as strategies for children with special needs teaching.

While forced to close its doors for 15 weeks during the COVID-19 lockdown, Neighborhood Music School continued to deliver instruction on-line. Meanwhile, school leaders took the time to reimagine the traditional model of arts education to place less emphasis on creating professional artists and give more attention to the development of life skills and the joy of shared artistic expression.

Today is International Strange Music Day. What's your favorite strange music?

Did you know that NMS provides close to $500,000 in financial aid and tuition support to more than 500 students each year?
A study conducted by South Korean scientists from the National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology found that plants grow faster when music is played around them. The study used 14 different classical pieces, including Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata," in rice fields. Findings were that the music helped the crops grow at a faster pace, and pointed to evidence that plants have genes which enable them to "hear."

In fact, Mozart sold the most CDs in 2016, beating out Adele, Drake, and Beyoncé, even though all of those artists had Grammy-winning hits that year.

Alan Bowie joined the NMS Board of Directors in 2019 to give back to the school that means so much to him and his family. Now a successful corporate attorney, Alan is also the grandson of a former beloved faculty member, Bill Bowie, whom he revered. Music was
at the center of Bill’s life and was also important to his family.
As a mentor to many, Bill took personal interest in his students, encouraging them to go beyond the study of music; he wanted them to be students of life and to be the best they could be. Alan reminisces about his own experience in a youth choir, and how he didn’t always appreciate the opportunities he had. Now he looks back and sees how they shaped his life. “If you made a mistake, you raised your hand. You owned up to your mistakes. That level of accountability—owning the moment and fixing it—that lesson has followed me.”
While in law school, he decided that if he ever came back to live in New Haven he would join the NMS board. Alan feels it’s the right place for him to be, as the mission aligns with what he believes to be important, and helps him keep a connection to his family legacy.

It's time to let loose and enjoy the weekend! 🎧💃

Virginia Wilkinson’s relationship with NMS goes back to the 70s when her three children took music lessons. Virginia has been very active with NMS over the years, taking piano performance classes, one-on-one lessons with Mary Bloom, and even joining five other adult students to form a piano lunch group.
Every 8–10 weeks, they get together to play and discuss a piece they’ve been working on, then have lunch together. Virginia and her friends enjoy many NMS programs, like Vintage Voices and Grace Feldman’s ensembles.
Today, Virginia continues with piano, and everyone in the Wilkinson family still plays an instrument.

We all have to start somewhere. Let NMS help you take those first steps. Whether it's music, dance, drama, or anything else with the arts we're here to help you!
